Weingut Schloss Lieser

Schloss Lieser was bought in run-down condition by Thomas Haag and his wife Ute in the 1990s, according to the estate's own site. The German-language version of the site adds that Thomas Haag drew on long experience at his parents' estate, Fritz Haag, and that the formerly famous estate was rebuilt over the course of the 1990s. A Falstaff text reproduced on the estate's awards page places the start of that rebuild in 1997 and says Thomas Haag left the running of the parental estate in Brauneberg to his younger brother Oliver. The estate's imprint names Thomas and Ute Haag, at Am Markt 1-5 in Lieser. Decanter reports that the winery is named for the adjacent Schloss Lieser castle, a 19th-century building that is now a Marriott Autograph Collection property.

As of September 2026, the estate's imprint names Thomas and Ute Haag for Weingut Schloss Lieser, with Thomas Haag responsible for the site's content. The estate says the next generation shares the passion for wine and is helping in the winery. Daughter Lara studied International Wine Business and completed the WSET Diploma, along with several internships abroad, and now focuses on marketing, sales, and export. Son Niklas studied viticulture and oenology and helps Thomas in the cellar and vineyards. Wine Spectator listed Niklas and Lara Haag of Weingut Schloss Lieser among six contemporary German winemakers to know in its September 30, 2026 issue.

The winery includes 26 hectares of vineyards, which the estate characterizes by exceptional steep slopes, slate soil, and hundred-year-old vines. Its German-language site counts eight VDP.Grosse Lagen among the best steep sites of the Middle Mosel, marked above all by blue weathered slate soils. The vineyards page lists Lieser Niederberg Helden, Brauneberger Juffer, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Doctor, and Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, each labeled VDP.Grosse Lage. Grapes are picked late by hand in several selections.

The estate organizes its range by VDP tier: VDP.Gutswein, VDP.Ortswein, VDP.Grosse Lage (Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, and Auslese Goldkapsel), and VDP.Grosses Gewächs. Its VDP.Gutswein and VDP.Ortswein page lists SL Riesling trocken, SL Riesling feinherb, Kabinettstück Riesling trocken, Heldenstück Riesling trocken, and Goldstück Riesling trocken, with Heldenstück and Goldstück marked VDP.Ortswein. Grosses Gewächs wines come from Doctor, Goldtröpfchen, Himmelreich, Juffer Sonnenuhr, Juffer, Niederberg Helden, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The estate's list of 2023 vintage wines also includes Auslese Lange Goldkapsel bottlings from Niederberg Helden and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and auction bottlings of Doctor Riesling Spätlese and Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel. Decanter describes the range as running from classic Kabinett to bone-dry Grosse Gewächse wines.

All of the Rieslings ferment spontaneously with natural yeast and at low temperature in the estate's 100-year-old vaulted cellar. The estate says this lets the wines unfold their terroir character, and describes them as revealing "a mineral complexity combined with an elegant fruitiness and low alcohol content." Its German-language site singles out the balance of sweetness and acidity as unique. The estate credits late hand-picking in several selections with Rieslings of great aging potential.

The Vinothek is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Comprehensive tastings should be reserved in advance by email, and the estate offers no guided tours of the vineyard or cellar. For the 2023 vintage, the estate began harvest on 19 September, which it calls the second earliest start of harvest in its history, and its team hand-picked for five weeks. Wine Spectator ranked the Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett Mosel Juffer 2019 as wine #54 of its 2021 Top 100.
