Vi de Finca (Catalonia's Qualified Estate Wine Distinction)

vee deh FEENG-kah

Catalonia's wine law of 27 June 2002, Llei 15/2002, defined the vino de finca. The current law, Llei 2/2020 of 5 March 2020, repealed that act and defines the vi de finca qualificada (VFQ): a wine produced within a protected designation of origin on a territory smaller than the municipal area, with its own characteristics and a specific traceability. A VFQ is recognized by resolution of the Catalan councillor responsible for viticulture, after a file opened by INCAVI, the Institut Català de la Vinya i el Vi. INCAVI's page, updated 16 June 2026, states that Catalonia has 22 VFQ wines and lists them under DO Empordà, DO Montsant, DO Penedès, DO Pla de Bages, DOQ Priorat and DO Terra Alta.

History & Origins

Catalonia's wine law, Llei 15/2002 d'ordenació vitivinícola of 27 June 2002, defined the vino de finca: within a denominació d'origen, a wine produced in a defined environment smaller than the municipal area, with its own characteristics, whose name is notoriously linked to the vines from which wines of special qualitative character are obtained. The same law required a prior report from the relevant consell regulador before a finca could be delimited, and it counted vins de finca among its quality wines produced in a specified region, alongside wines with a denominació d'origen and a denominació d'origen qualificada. Llei 2/2020 of 5 March 2020, de la vitivinicultura, repealed Llei 15/2002 and now governs the vi de finca qualificada. Its preamble flags one important change: the winery no longer has to sit on the producing finca itself, but it must be within the zone of the protected designation of origin. INCAVI records that Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca, from René Barbier in DOQ Priorat, was the first wine to achieve the Vi de Finca Qualificada distinction.

  • Llei 15/2002 of 27 June 2002 listed wines with a denominació d'origen, wines with a denominació d'origen qualificada and vins de finca as its quality wines produced in a specified region
  • Under the 2002 law, delimiting a finca required a prior report from the corresponding consell regulador
  • Llei 2/2020's preamble says wineries no longer necessarily have to be on the producing finca, but they must be within the protected designation of origin's zone
  • INCAVI names Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca, made by René Barbier, as the first wine to achieve the Vi de Finca Qualificada distinction
Key Facts
  • Catalonia's Llei 15/2002 of 27 June 2002 defined the vino de finca as a wine produced, within a denominació d'origen, in a defined environment smaller than the municipal area, whose name is notoriously linked to the vines it comes from
  • Llei 2/2020 of 5 March 2020 repealed Llei 15/2002; INCAVI states that the vi de finca qualificada is now defined in article 4 of Llei 2/2020, and article 31 of that law regulates it
  • INCAVI describes the Vins de Finca Qualificada as the highest distinction the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya grants to wines
  • Under article 31 of Llei 2/2020, the vineyard plots and producing wineries need at least ten years' registration with the protected designation of origin, and maximum yields must be at least 15% below those set in its pliego de condiciones
  • INCAVI's requirements add a winery track record of prestige and quality in the market of at least 10 years and ageing in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 600 litres
  • A VFQ enjoys the same protection as the protected designation of origin it belongs to, and the recognition must appear on the label together with that designation's name (Llei 2/2020, article 31)
  • INCAVI's page, updated 16 June 2026, states that Catalonia has 22 VFQ wines, and it names Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca as the first wine to achieve the distinction

Classification Requirements & Wine Law

Article 31 of Llei 2/2020 sets the procedure. A VFQ is recognized by resolution of the councillor responsible for viticulture, after a file opened by INCAVI that sets out the special qualitative characteristics tied to a defined environment smaller than a municipality, and that file must include a mandatory report from the management body of the protected designation of origin in which the finca lies. Among the stricter requirements, the law sets a minimum of ten years' registration for the vineyard plots and producing wineries in the designation's registers, and maximum yields, in kilograms and hectolitres per hectare, at least 15% below those in the designation's pliego de condiciones. The score required by the VFQ tasting committee must be higher than the score required for the designation's other wines. INCAVI's own summary of the requirements adds a winery track record of prestige and quality in the market of 10 years or more, integral traceability from production to marketing, a specific environment with its own soil and microclimatic characteristics, and ageing in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 600 litres. The finca's name is reserved for the protected designation of origin wines produced there, the recognition carries the same protection as the designation itself, and it must appear on the label with the designation's name.

  • Recognition comes by resolution of the Catalan councillor responsible for viticulture, following an INCAVI file with a mandatory report from the designation's management body (Llei 2/2020, article 31)
  • Vineyard plots and wineries must have at least ten years' registration with the designation, and maximum yields must be at least 15% below its pliego de condiciones
  • The legal definition quoted by INCAVI requires the vineyard owner and the winery owner to coincide, or a contractual relationship of at least ten years between them
  • INCAVI requires ageing in oak barrels of at most 600 litres, and the law requires the VFQ recognition to appear on the label alongside the designation's name

Geographic Scope: A Catalonia-Wide Designation

The distinction is not tied to one appellation. INCAVI's page, updated 16 June 2026, states that Catalonia has 22 vins de finca qualificada and lists them under six DOs: Empordà, Montsant, Penedès, Pla de Bages, Priorat and Terra Alta. The law links every VFQ to a protected designation of origin and to a territory smaller than a municipality. DOQ Priorat also runs its own classification, Els noms de la terra (The names of the land), whose levels run from DOQ Priorat wine through Vins de Vila and Paratge wines to Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada.

  • DO Penedès accounts for eight wines on INCAVI's list, including four from Celler Can Bas Domini Vinícola (La Capella, La Creu, La Romana and Monreal) and two from Jean Leon (Vinya La Scala and Vinya Palau)
  • DO Pla de Bages entries include Finca 3.9 from Celler Abadal and Arnau Oller from Heretat Oller del Mas; the DO Montsant entries are Teixar from Celler Vinyes Domènech and Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau from Ortovins
  • DO Empordà is represented by V d'O 2 from Celler Vinyes d'Olivardots, and DO Terra Alta by Vi de Finca Edetària from Celler Edetària and La Serra Blanc from Celler Herència Altés
  • Decanter reported in 2021 that Priorat's vineyard classification list was formally released in spring 2019 and that 2017 was the first vintage allowed for certification

Grape Varieties & Wine Styles

Because the VFQ list spans six DOs, its varieties range widely. INCAVI lists Garnatxa negra, Carinyena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca, and Carinyena alone for Vall Llach's Mas de la Rosa. In DO Penedès, Jean Leon's Vinya La Scala is Cabernet Sauvignon from an eight-hectare plot and Vinya Palau is Merlot, while Eudald Massana Noya's Avi Ton is Xarel·lo from organically farmed vines planted in 1945. Teixar in DO Montsant is Garnatxa peluda, and Heretat Oller del Mas's Especial Picapoll negre is made from Picapoll negre. White wines hold the distinction too: Mas d'en Gil's Coma Blanca is Garnatxa blanca and Macabeu, Can Bas's La Creu is Sauvignon Blanc, and Herència Altés's La Serra Blanc is Garnatxa blanca.

  • Priorat's four VFQ wines on INCAVI's list (Clos Fontà, Coma Blanca, Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca and Mas de la Rosa) draw on Garnatxa negra, Carinyena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnatxa blanca and Macabeu
  • Vall Llach's Mas de la Rosa is Carinyena from Porrera; Decanter reported in 2021 that the Mas de la Rosa vineyard was planted in 1906
  • V d'O 2 from DO Empordà is Carinyena from a sandy site at 90 metres altitude in the Alt Empordà, from a vineyard INCAVI dates to 1909, aged 16 months in French oak barrels
  • White VFQ wines include Coma Blanca (Garnatxa blanca and Macabeu), La Creu (Sauvignon Blanc), Singular Blanc (Macabeu) and La Serra Blanc (Garnatxa blanca)

Key Producers & Certified Vineyards

In DOQ Priorat, INCAVI lists four VFQ wines: Clos Fontà and Coma Blanca from Celler Mas d'en Gil in Bellmunt del Priorat, Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca, and Mas de la Rosa from Celler Vall Llach in Porrera. The DOQ Priorat council announced Clos Fontà and Coma Blanca as two new Vins de Finca in October 2018, unveiled at the winery in an event led by Teresa Jordà, the Generalitat de Catalunya's councillor for agriculture. According to the same announcement, Mas d'en Gil is owned by the Rovira Carbonell family and introduced its first DOQ Priorat wines in 2000. Two VFQ wines also sit within Priorat's own Els noms de la terra classification: the DOQ's January 2024 list of Gran Vinya Classificada vineyards includes Mas de la Rosa in Porrera, and its Vinya Classificada list includes the Clos Mogador vineyard in Gratallops, in the Coll de Falset paratge. Both wines still appear on INCAVI's VFQ list updated in June 2026.

  • Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca, made by René Barbier, is the first wine INCAVI credits with the Vi de Finca Qualificada distinction
  • Mas d'en Gil's Clos Fontà (Black Grenache and Carignan) and Coma Blanca (White Grenache and Macabeo) were introduced as Vins de Finca by DOQ Priorat in October 2018
  • Decanter reported in 2021 that Vall Llach's Mas de la Rosa was one of the first three Gran Vinya Classificada wines, alongside Álvaro Palacios's L'Ermita and Mas Doix's 1902 Tossal d'en Bou
  • Beyond Priorat, INCAVI's list includes Heretat Oller del Mas (Arnau Oller and Especial Picapoll negre, DO Pla de Bages) and Celler Vinyes Domènech (Teixar, DO Montsant)

Vi de Finca, Vino de Pago & the Wider Classification Landscape

Spain's national Vino de Pago system came into legal being in 2003, according to a 2018 Decanter article by Miquel Hudin, which describes it as based in Spain's DOs while functioning independently of them, with the national Ministry of Agriculture giving final approval. The same article notes that within Catalonia a separate classification called Vi de Finca exists only for Catalan wines and functions in the same manner. Decanter added that Rioja, Bierzo and Priorat had no Vino de Pago vineyards and none were planning to apply, having chosen to define their own top vineyards through local quality pyramids. In Priorat that pyramid is Els noms de la terra, which the DOQ presents in five levels: DOQ Priorat wine, Vins de Vila, Paratge wines, Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada. A VFQ, by contrast, is recognized by resolution of the Catalan councillor responsible for viticulture under Llei 2/2020, with the designation's management body giving a mandatory report.

  • Decanter (2018) dates the Vino de Pago system's legal start to 2003; Catalonia's Llei 15/2002, which defined the vino de finca, dates from 27 June 2002
  • Decanter (2018) describes Vi de Finca as Catalonia's separate classification that functions in the same manner as Vino de Pago
  • Decanter (2021) reports that in Priorat's classification a winery starting from zero enters at Vi de Paratge, then reaches Vinya Classificada and finally Gran Vinya Classificada, a process of 10 years
  • The two systems overlap in practice: Mas de la Rosa appears both on INCAVI's 2026 VFQ list and on DOQ Priorat's January 2024 Gran Vinya Classificada list

  • Vi de finca: defined in Catalonia's Llei 15/2002 of 27 June 2002; now the vi de finca qualificada (VFQ) under Llei 2/2020 of 5 March 2020, which repealed the 2002 law and, per INCAVI, defines the VFQ in its article 4.
  • Definition: a wine within a protected designation of origin, from a territory smaller than the municipal area, with its own characteristics and a specific traceability; its name is notoriously linked to its vines and cannot be used for other wine products.
  • Law requirements (article 31): vineyard plots and wineries registered with the designation for at least ten years; maximum yields at least 15% below the designation's pliego de condiciones; a tasting committee score higher than for the designation's other wines.
  • INCAVI adds: a 10-year or longer market track record of prestige and quality, oak barrels of at most 600 litres, and integral traceability; the recognition must appear on the label with the designation's name.
  • INCAVI (page updated 16 June 2026): 22 VFQ wines, listed under six DOs; Clos Mogador's Vi de Finca was the first. Priorat's separate Els noms de la terra classification tops out at Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada.
