Mountadam

How to say it

Mountadam was established in 1972 by visionary Penfolds winemaker David Wynn and his viticulturist son Adam, who planted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon on the High Eden plateau at 550 metres elevation. The estate pioneered serious cool-climate Chardonnay production in Australia and remains a benchmark for the variety in Eden Valley. Sold by the Wynn family to LVMH in 2000 and then to David Brown and his family in 2005, Mountadam continues to express the high-altitude High Eden terroir through estate-grown wines from approximately 80 hectares of vines.

📜Founding and Vision

David Wynn was already a major figure in Australian wine when he founded Mountadam in 1972: chairman of Penfolds, pioneer of the screw-cap-era Coonawarra Cabernet style, and architect of Wynns Coonawarra Estate's rise to national prominence. Approaching retirement from Penfolds, Wynn wanted to build a personal estate dedicated to cool-climate varieties that he believed Australia could produce at world-class quality. He chose the High Eden plateau at 550 metres elevation, far higher than the established Barossa Zone vineyards, and partnered with his viticulturist son Adam to plant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The first commercial vintage followed in the late 1970s. Mountadam's early Chardonnay releases, made in a restrained, food-friendly style at lower alcohol than the prevailing Australian fashion, were among the wines that proved Australia could produce serious cool-climate Chardonnay outside Tasmania and Yarra Valley.

  • 1972: David Wynn (Penfolds chairman) and son Adam plant Mountadam at 550 m on the High Eden plateau
  • Vision: world-class cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a high-altitude Australian site
  • Late 1970s: first commercial vintages establish Mountadam Chardonnay as a national benchmark
  • Mountadam Chardonnay proves Australia can match cool-climate Chardonnay alongside Tasmania and Yarra Valley

🏔️Vineyard and Altitude

Mountadam's vineyards sit on the High Eden plateau at approximately 550 metres above sea level, the highest commercial vineyard altitude in the Barossa Zone and considerably cooler than Eden Valley's lower sites. Mean January temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius, with cool nights routinely dropping into single digits during ripening. Annual rainfall is approximately 800 millimetres concentrated in winter. Soils are weathered granite and quartzite with sandy loam over rocky subsoil; the low-fertility profile naturally restricts vigour and concentrates flavour. The estate has approximately 80 hectares of vineyards across Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and small parcels of Shiraz. Yields are deliberately low; many blocks are dry-grown. Hand-harvest is standard for the premium parcels. The vineyards have been managed under a minimal-intervention regime since the Wynn era, with the Brown family continuing the philosophy after 2005.

  • 550 m elevation on High Eden plateau; highest commercial vineyard altitude in the Barossa Zone
  • Mean January temperature ~18°C; nights into single digits during ripening; annual rainfall ~800 mm winter-concentrated
  • Soils: weathered granite and quartzite with sandy loam over rocky subsoil; low fertility restricts vigour
  • ~80 ha across Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz; dry-grown blocks; hand-harvest for premium parcels

🛢️Winemaking and Style

Mountadam's winemaking has prioritised restraint and varietal expression since the David Wynn era. Chardonnay is the flagship: whole-bunch pressed, fermented in French oak barriques with a meaningful proportion of new wood but always supporting rather than dominating the fruit, with partial malolactic fermentation calibrated by vintage to retain natural acidity. The High Eden Chardonnay shows white peach, citrus, hazelnut, and oatmeal with bright acidity and a fine mineral line, built for 8 to 12 years of cellaring. Pinot Noir is open-fermented with whole-bunch components in selected vintages and aged in mostly older French oak; the cool-climate fruit produces a savoury, structured Pinot quite distinct from Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula examples. Riesling follows a bone-dry style in stainless steel, retaining the cool-altitude High Eden acid drive. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz blocks contribute structured cool-climate reds with herbal and mineral character.

  • Chardonnay: whole-bunch pressed, French oak barrique fermentation, partial malolactic; white peach, citrus, hazelnut, oatmeal; 8-12 year cellaring
  • Pinot Noir: open ferment with whole-bunch components in select vintages; older French oak; cool-altitude savoury structure
  • Riesling: stainless steel, bone-dry, cool-altitude acid drive
  • Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz: structured cool-climate reds with herbal and mineral character

🍷Wine Range and Tier Structure

Mountadam's range is organised in two principal tiers. The flagship High Eden tier carries the estate's iconic single-vineyard wines: High Eden Chardonnay, High Eden Pinot Noir, High Eden Riesling, and a small-production High Eden Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines reflect the estate's premium parcels and are the wines on which Mountadam's national and international reputation rests. The Eden Valley tier offers more accessible expressions of the estate range under the Mountadam label without the High Eden designation, drawn from younger blocks or lower-elevation vineyard sections. Production across both tiers totals approximately 30,000 cases per year. The Patriarch reserve Chardonnay and the small-production single-block bottlings appear occasionally in standout vintages. All wines are sealed under Stelvin screw cap.

  • High Eden tier (premium): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon from the 550 m plateau
  • Eden Valley tier (accessible): Mountadam-labelled wines from younger or lower-elevation blocks
  • Patriarch reserve Chardonnay and small-production single-block bottlings in standout vintages
  • Total production ~30,000 cases per year; all wines sealed under Stelvin screw cap

🏛️Ownership and Modern Identity

The Wynn family operated Mountadam from founding through 2000, when the estate was sold to LVMH as part of the luxury group's expansion in premium Australian wine. LVMH retained Mountadam alongside Cape Mentelle (Margaret River) and Cloudy Bay (Marlborough) before divesting in 2005. The estate was acquired by David Brown and his family, who have continued the cool-climate philosophy and invested in vineyard upgrades while preserving the wine style established by the Wynns. Adam Wynn, who co-founded the estate with his father, has continued in Australian wine through other ventures. Mountadam remains one of the most important high-altitude estates in the Barossa Zone and one of the few Australian producers built specifically around the High Eden subregion identity. The 2001 GI registration of High Eden as Eden Valley's only formally declared sub-region was anchored in significant part on Mountadam's plateau-altitude pioneering work.

  • 1972-2000: David Wynn and Adam Wynn ownership; estate built reputation as High Eden Chardonnay benchmark
  • 2000-2005: LVMH ownership alongside Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay
  • 2005 to present: David Brown family ownership; cool-climate philosophy continues

Flavor Profile

Mountadam High Eden Chardonnay shows white peach, citrus, hazelnut, and oatmeal aromatics on a precise, fine-mineral palate with bright acidity, supportive French oak (rather than dominating), and 8 to 12 year cellaring potential. Pinot Noir presents savoury cool-climate cherry, forest floor, and herbal lift with structured tannins. Riesling delivers crystalline lime, slate, and white floral aromatics with bone-dry palate and acid drive characteristic of High Eden's 550 m elevation. Cabernet Sauvignon shows blackcurrant, eucalyptus, and dried herb with cool-climate structure; Shiraz tends toward red fruit, sage, and pepper rather than the riper Barossa Valley profile. Across the range, Mountadam wines emphasise precision, acidity, and varietal expression over weight or concentration.
