Errázuriz
eh-RAH-soo-rees
Chile's historic Panquehue estate, founded 1870 by Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso with pre-phylloxera Bordeaux cuttings and operated continuously across five generations to the present-day Eduardo Chadwick, the family that organized the 2004 Berlin Tasting where Viñedo Chadwick 2000 and Seña 2001 placed first and second above Bordeaux first-growths and accelerated international recognition of Chilean fine wine.
Errázuriz is one of the historic anchors of Chilean wine, founded in 1870 by Chilean industrialist Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso in Panquehue, the central depression of Aconcagua Valley approximately 100 kilometers north of Santiago. The estate has operated continuously across five generations of the Errázuriz and Chadwick families to the present-day Eduardo Chadwick. Don Maximiano brought French vine cuttings from Bordeaux pre-phylloxera (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon) and modelled his viticultural operations on the Bordeaux estate format, planting at Panquehue and expanding through Aconcagua Valley. The modern premium era began in the late 1980s under Eduardo Chadwick, who launched Seña as a joint venture with Robert Mondavi in 1995, planted Viñedo Chadwick at Puente Alto in Maipo in 1992 (first vintage 1999), and organized the January 2004 Berlin Tasting where Viñedo Chadwick 2000 and Seña 2001 placed first and second above Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, and Solaia. The estate's premium portfolio spans Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve (Cabernet Sauvignon), Kai (Carménère), Las Pizarras (Aconcagua Costa schist single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), La Cumbre (cool-climate Syrah), and the Seña joint venture (now wholly owned by the Chadwick family).

Don Maximiano and the 1870 Founding
Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso (1832-1890) was a Chilean industrialist and mining entrepreneur of Basque heritage whose family had been prominent in Chilean political and commercial life since the colonial era; his cousin Federico Errázuriz Zañartu served as President of Chile from 1871 to 1876. In 1870, after success in mining and railroad ventures in northern Chile, Don Maximiano acquired land in the Panquehue area of Aconcagua Valley, approximately 100 kilometers north of Santiago, and established his namesake wine estate. He brought French vine cuttings from Bordeaux pre-phylloxera (the European phylloxera epidemic struck France in the 1860s and devastated French vineyards through the following decades), planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and modeling his viticultural operations on the Bordeaux château format with extensive estate vineyards and integrated production. The Panquehue plantings rapidly grew to over 700 hectares by the late 1880s, making the estate at the time the largest single wine property in South America. Don Maximiano died in 1890; the estate passed through subsequent Errázuriz generations and remained continuously family-operated to the present.

Five Generations of Continuity
Errázuriz's five-generation family continuity is unusual at this scale among major New World producers and provides the institutional foundation underlying the estate's modern premium identity. After Don Maximiano's 1890 death the estate passed to his son Rafael Errázuriz Urmeneta, who managed the property through the early 20th century. The mid-20th-century period saw difficult financial pressure and gradual contraction of the vineyard footprint as Chilean wine demand and the family's broader business interests shifted, but the estate remained continuously in family hands. Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz (whose mother was an Errázuriz family member) acquired the estate from the broader Errázuriz family in the 1970s and began the modern revival; he was a notable polo player (eight-time Chilean polo champion) and built the family's residential polo field at the Puente Alto block in Maipo that would later become Viñedo Chadwick. Eduardo Chadwick, Alfonso's son, took managing leadership in the late 1980s with the explicit goal of repositioning Errázuriz at the global premium tier. Eduardo's modern era includes the 1995 Seña joint venture launch, the 1992 Viñedo Chadwick planting at Puente Alto (first vintage 1999), the 2004 Berlin Tasting, and the launch of Las Pizarras single-vineyard Chardonnay-Pinot Noir from Aconcagua Costa metamorphic schist in the 2000s.
- Generation 1: Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso (1870-1890 founding through death); Generation 2: Rafael Errázuriz Urmeneta (early 20th century)
- Mid-20th-century period of financial pressure and vineyard footprint contraction; estate remained continuously in family hands
- Generation 4: Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz (1970s acquisition through Errázuriz family branch); 8-time Chilean polo champion; built residential polo field at Puente Alto in Maipo (later Viñedo Chadwick)
- Generation 5: Eduardo Chadwick (current managing leadership from late 1980s); led 1995 Seña launch, 1992 Viñedo Chadwick planting (first vintage 1999), 2004 Berlin Tasting, 2000s Las Pizarras launch
Estate Vineyards Across Aconcagua
Errázuriz's estate vineyards span the three transversal sub-zones of Aconcagua Valley plus a key Maipo Valley premium plot at Puente Alto. Aconcagua Entre Cordilleras around Panquehue at 600 to 800 meters elevation anchors the historic estate with alluvial gravels and clay-loam soils supporting Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc plantings; the Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve flagship sources from these blocks, as does Seña (biodynamic certification since 2006). Aconcagua Andes climbs into the eastern piedmont at 800 to 1,200 meters with alluvial fans and decomposed granite, supporting structured Cabernet Sauvignon and emerging high-altitude Chardonnay. Aconcagua Costa features the family's most distinctive viticultural discovery: the Las Pizarras vineyard near Concón on metamorphic schist (in Spanish pizarra, meaning slate-schist), identified by Eduardo Chadwick and his viticultural team in the 2000s as a previously unknown Chilean soil type. The Las Pizarras single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir released from this site established Aconcagua Costa as the country's leading premium cool-climate Chardonnay-Pinot Noir source. Viñedo Chadwick at Puente Alto in Maipo Valley (the Chadwick family residential polo field planted 1992 with first vintage 1999) is technically a separate operation but Chadwick family-owned and managed alongside the Errázuriz portfolio.
- Aconcagua Entre Cordilleras (Panquehue, 600-800m): historic estate core; alluvial gravels and clay-loam; Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve and Seña source
- Aconcagua Andes (eastern piedmont, 800-1,200m): alluvial fans and decomposed granite; structured Cabernet Sauvignon and emerging high-altitude Chardonnay
- Aconcagua Costa Las Pizarras vineyard (near Concón, metamorphic schist/pizarra): identified by Errázuriz in 2000s as previously unknown Chilean soil type; flagship single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir source
- Viñedo Chadwick (Puente Alto, Maipo Valley, planted 1992 first vintage 1999): Chadwick family residential polo field; technically separate operation but Chadwick family-owned and managed alongside Errázuriz portfolio
Seña and Strategic Joint Ventures
Errázuriz's joint venture history defines the modern Chilean fine-wine internationalization narrative. In 1995 Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi (the Napa Valley winemaker who had previously founded Opus One with Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1979) launched Seña as a Chilean Bordeaux-style flagship: a Cabernet Sauvignon-Carménère-Cabernet Franc-Petit Verdot-Malbec blend from Aconcagua biodynamic estate vineyards, conceived as Chile's equivalent of Opus One or Sassicaia. The first commercial vintage was 1995. After Robert Mondavi's company was acquired by Constellation Brands in 2004, the Mondavi family sold their share of Seña back to the Chadwick family, and Errázuriz has been the sole owner since 2005. Seña received biodynamic certification in 2006 and has been a regular Wine Spectator Top 100 entry (multiple top-ten placements) and James Suckling annual report leader. The Caliterra brand was launched 1991 as a separate Errázuriz/Mondavi joint venture targeting more accessible price tiers; it operated 1991-1996 as a joint venture before being spun out as a separate Errázuriz-owned brand at Colchagua Valley. The Chadwick family's Viñedo Chadwick label (premium single-vineyard Maipo Puente Alto Cabernet Sauvignon, first vintage 1999) extends the premium portfolio.
- Seña (1995, originally Errázuriz + Robert Mondavi family JV): Chilean Bordeaux-style flagship blend (Cabernet Sauvignon-Carménère-Cabernet Franc-Petit Verdot-Malbec); first commercial vintage 1995; conceived as Chile's Opus One equivalent
- Mondavi share sold back to Chadwick family in 2004-2005 after Constellation acquisition of Robert Mondavi Winery; Errázuriz sole owner since 2005; biodynamic certification 2006
- Caliterra (1991, Errázuriz/Mondavi JV; 1996 spin-out as separate Errázuriz-owned brand at Colchagua Valley): more accessible price tier
- Viñedo Chadwick (1992 planting, first vintage 1999, Maipo Puente Alto): Chadwick family premium single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon; separate operation but family-owned and managed alongside Errázuriz portfolio

Look it up →The 2004 Berlin Tasting
The Berlin Tasting of January 2004 is the international turning point for Errázuriz and Chilean fine wine more broadly. Eduardo Chadwick organized the event at the Ritz-Carlton Berlin as a blind comparative tasting of Chilean, Bordeaux, and Tuscan icons judged by 36 European wine critics including Tim Atkin, Steven Spurrier (the Judgment of Paris architect who organized the 1976 Napa-versus-Bordeaux tasting that established Napa Valley's premium identity), Sarah Kemp, and other prominent voices. The blind tasting placed Viñedo Chadwick 2000 (Puente Alto Cabernet Sauvignon) in first place and Errázuriz Seña 2001 in second place, both above Château Lafite Rothschild 2000, Château Margaux 2001, Château Latour 2000, and Solaia 2000. The Bordeaux first-growth result was the international turning point for Chilean fine wine and accelerated recognition of Aconcagua and Maipo Valley premium reds across global markets. Subsequent Berlin Tasting World Tours through 2014 maintained the global profile in London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, São Paulo, and Toronto. Chadwick has continued to organize comparative tastings of Chilean premium wines against international icons through the 2010s and 2020s as part of the broader Chilean fine-wine internationalization narrative.

Portfolio from Estate to Don Maximiano
Errázuriz's premium portfolio is structured across multiple tiers from accessible value to ultra-premium flagship. Estate Reserve (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc) is the most widely distributed accessible tier. Max Reserva (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc) is the mid-premium tier with single-varietal expressions. Aconcagua Costa Single-Vineyard (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah) showcases the cool-climate coastal sub-zone. Aconcagua Alto and Wild Ferment Chardonnay represent the next premium tier. The flagship single-vineyard premium tier includes Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (since 1983, the estate's flagship from Panquehue gravels), Kai (single-vineyard Carménère from Aconcagua Entre Cordilleras), Las Pizarras Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (single-vineyard from Aconcagua Costa metamorphic schist), and La Cumbre Syrah (Aconcagua Costa cool-climate single-vineyard). The Seña joint venture flagship (now Chadwick-owned) sits at the top of the broader portfolio at premium ultra-tier pricing alongside Viñedo Chadwick Cabernet Sauvignon (technically a separate Chadwick family label).
