Erdener Prälat

The VDP describes Prälat as rising rocky, steep and fissured opposite the Mosel village of Erden, with bare red stone showing between vines that cling to the slope in small plots. The VDP puts the slope at around 65 degrees (210 percent), adds that German sites are only rarely steeper, and places the vines between 110 and 220 metres above sea level on a purely south-facing slope. Mönchhof gives the same 110 to 220 metre range and says the small, partly barren terraces are planted exclusively in traditional single-stake training. Karl Erbes, which lists Prälat among its vineyards on the steep slopes of the Middle Mosel, describes a narrow strip of steep vineyard squeezed between the river and huge red slate rocks in the bend of a large Mosel loop.

The VDP gives the soil as iron-rich red slate with a clay component. The VDP attributes the warm microclimate to shelter from the Mosel loop and the surrounding vineyards, intense sunshine on the purely south-facing slope, and massive heat-storing rock. Karl Erbes adds that the vines benefit from warmth the rocks absorb by day and radiate at night and from the river's large reservoir of water, and says the vines here bud and flower earlier than anywhere else in the Middle Mosel, with ripeness levels in most vintages at the top of the whole region. Markus Molitor describes the soil as weathered red slate with a relatively high rock content, and the site as sheltered between rock massifs and the river.

According to the VDP, Prälat once belonged to the Treppchen and was demarcated as a separate site at the end of the 19th century, when the new name honoured Prälat Professor Dr. Franz Steffens (1853-1930), a winegrower's son from Ürzig. Mönchhof gives the same account. The VDP classifies Prälat as a VDP.Grosse Lage, with Riesling as the classified variety and 1.63 hectares of classified area (VDP Weinberg.Online, fetched 2026). Dr. Loosen, a VDP member since 1993 by its own account, notes that the VDP's Mosel regional association does without the VDP.Erste Lage tier. Decanter describes the Mosel's Grosse Lagen as equivalent to grands crus.

The VDP lists Dr. Loosen as the VDP member working Prälat. Dr. Loosen calls it "unquestionably our finest vineyard" and says the sheltered site allows outstanding dry Rieslings as well as high-quality Auslesen and botrytis selections every year. Its estate shop lists a 2019 Erdener Prälat Riesling dry GG Réserve, from a range it says is harvested from the best parcels of very old, ungrafted vines in Grand Cru vineyards, and an Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel. Decanter's Dr Loosen factfile lists Erdener Prälat among the estate's six Grosse Lage holdings. Mönchhof and Markus Molitor list Prälat among their vineyards; Karl Erbes says it picked its first Prälat harvest with the 2012 vintage; and Schmitges lists a 2023 Erdener Prälat GG and a 2022 Erdener Prälat Réserve feinherb.

Moselwein e.V. reported in 2018 that the Roman wine presses in Erden sit at the foot of a biodiversity "Leuchtpunkt" named "Erdener Prälat/Treppchen & Ürziger Sonnenuhr", a project of the Lebendige Moselweinberge initiative. It says the rocks at the boundary between Erden and Ürzig are home to the extremely rare rock bunting and the eagle owl, and that the Erdener Klettersteig climbing trail lets visitors experience the area up close. Decanter's Middle Mosel guide describes a one-hour boat ride from Bernkastel-Kues that reaches the steep red slates of Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Prälat, from where visitors can disembark to see the ruins of an ancient Roman wine press near Erden.
