History and Family Legacy
The Molitor family has farmed in the Mosel for eight generations, but the estate as it exists today is largely the creation of Markus Molitor, who took control from his father at just 20 years old in 1984. At that point the property covered a modest 1.5 hectares. Through decades of strategic acquisition, Markus expanded the estate to its current 120 hectares, making it the largest privately-owned, family-run winery in the Mosel region. The estate remains 100% family-owned, and Markus's daughter Helena now represents the ninth generation.
- Markus took over the family winery in 1984 at age 20
- Grew the estate from 1.5 hectares to 120 hectares over his tenure
- Daughter Helena represents the ninth generation of the Molitor family
- Gained worldwide attention in 2015 when three 2013 Auslese Rieslings each received 100-point ratings from Wine Advocate
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate's 120 hectares span 15 different vineyard sites, with 75% concentrated in Grand Cru locations along the Middle Mosel and the remaining 25% in the Saar. Soils are dominated by Devonian slate in various forms, including weathered, blue, and red clay slate, alongside volcanic slate and sandstone. The steep slopes, which account for 95% of the estate's vineyard area, create unique microclimates and position the Molitor sites among the sunniest growing locations in Germany. Some ungrafted vines on these slopes are approximately 100 years old.
- Legendary sites include Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Doctor, Erdener Prälat, Scharzhofberger, and Ürziger Würzgarten
- Soils are primarily Devonian slate in multiple forms, contributing to the estate's signature minerality
- 95% of vineyards classified as steep to extremely steep; all vineyard work is done by hand
- Continental climate with cool growing season and intense sun exposure on south-facing slopes
Grape Varieties
Riesling dominates the estate at 94 to 95% of plantings, reflecting both the region's tradition and Markus Molitor's conviction that the Mosel's great terroirs express themselves most completely through this variety. Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc account for the remainder of production. The focus on Riesling spans the full stylistic spectrum, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, giving the estate a breadth of expression rare in any single producer.
- Riesling accounts for 94 to 95% of all plantings
- Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc complete the grape portfolio
- Riesling is produced across the full range from dry to botrytis-affected sweet styles
- Terroir-specific expression and minerality are the defining stylistic goals across all wines

Look it up →Winemaking Philosophy
Markus Molitor's approach in the cellar mirrors his commitment in the vineyard: minimal intervention with maximum attention to site expression. Fermentation uses only natural yeasts, and the winery employs no fining agents, enzymes, or additives. Wines are aged in large traditional Fuder barrels of 1,000 to 3,000 liters and kept on their lees to build texture and complexity. The cellar itself is carved directly from the slate rock of Wehlener Klosterberg, providing naturally stable conditions.
- Natural yeasts only for all fermentations; no fining agents, enzymes, or additives
- Aged in large wooden Fuder barrels ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 liters
- Sur lie aging preserves texture and amplifies terroir character
- Cellar carved from the slate rock of Wehlener Klosterberg
The Capsule Color System
Rather than joining the VDP and using its classification framework, Markus Molitor developed a proprietary capsule color system to communicate wine style and quality level to consumers. This system allows the estate to produce 60 to 100 distinct wines per vintage, ranging from dry White Capsule bottlings through progressively richer and sweeter styles up to the Gold Capsule tier. The breadth of this range is extraordinary for a single producer and reflects the estate's commitment to capturing every dimension of its terroir in a given vintage.
- Estate is not a VDP member; uses its own color-coded capsule system instead
- White Capsule denotes dry styles; Gold Capsule indicates the richest sweet wines
- 60 to 100 different wines produced per vintage across the full style spectrum
- The system spans from austere, mineral dry Rieslings to late-harvest and botrytis-influenced bottlings
Markus Molitor Rieslings are defined by razor-sharp acidity, pronounced slate-driven minerality, and crystalline precision. Dry styles show citrus, green apple, and wet stone with intense focus and length. Sweet styles layer stone fruit, honey, and botrytis complexity over the same mineral backbone, with the acidity providing decades of aging potential.
