Domaine Saumaize-Michelin

doh-MEN soh-MEZ mee-shuh-LAN

Domaine Saumaize-Michelin is a Maconnais estate based in Vergisson, founded in 1977 by Roger Saumaize on his family's vines and built up alongside his wife Christine, born Michelin, also from a Vergisson vigneron family. The estate covers approximately eleven hectares, predominantly Chardonnay with a small Gamay parcel for Macon Rouge. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically (without formal certification), following the conversion Roger and Christine began in the mid-2000s after training with Pierre Masson. The next generation is now active: son Vivien returned in 2012 and took over vinification in 2018, and daughter Lisa joined in 2020. The estate is widely recognised for its parcellary work on the Roche de Vergisson, with four Pouilly-Fuisse Premier Cru holdings: Vers Cras, Les Crays, Clos sur la Roche, and La Marechaude, all classified in the September 2020 INAO decree that created the 22 Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru climats. Saumaize-Michelin sits alongside Guffens-Heynen and Daniel Barraud as Vergisson-anchored Maconnais reference producers.

📜Roger, Christine, and the Vergisson Base

Roger Saumaize founded the estate in 1977 on his family's vines in Vergisson, a village at the northern end of the Pouilly-Fuisse appellation distinguished by the limestone Roche de Vergisson rising above the vineyards. He married Christine Michelin, also from a Vergisson vigneron family, and the combined holdings formed the basis of the modern domaine. The Saumaize name is shared across several Vergisson estates (Domaine Pierre Saumaize, Domaine Jacques et Nathalie Saumaize, and others), and the Saumaize-Michelin line specifically anchors itself in the home village with parcels around the Roche de Vergisson slopes. The estate has long been one of the smaller-scale quality Maconnais producers, working roughly eleven hectares with manual harvest and a small team.

🌿Biodynamic Without Certification

Roger and Christine began converting the estate to biodynamic farming in the mid-2000s after training with Pierre Masson, the influential French biodynamic consultant. The estate works fully biodynamically: horn manure, horn silica, the standard preparations, attention to the lunar calendar for treatments and pruning. Saumaize-Michelin has deliberately chosen not to pursue formal Demeter or Biodyvin certification, a position the estate states explicitly on its own materials. The conversion was driven by soil-health concerns on the steep Vergisson limestone slopes and a broader commitment to minimal chemical inputs rather than by certification economics. The result has been healthier soils, balanced canopies, and a body of work that has been cited as a credibility argument for biodynamics in the broader Maconnais quality movement.

🏛️Four Pouilly-Fuisse Premier Cru Holdings

The estate holds parcels in four of the 22 Pouilly-Fuisse climats classified as Premier Cru by INAO in September 2020. Vers Cras, Les Crays, and Clos sur la Roche are all in Vergisson, with the Clos sur la Roche parcel originating from the oldest vines on the estate (planted 1979 on the south-facing reverse slope of the Roche de Vergisson). La Marechaude was acquired by the family in 2013 with Vivien collaborating on the early bottlings. Beyond the four 1er Crus, the Pouilly-Fuisse range includes village-level bottlings (Pentacrine, Les Tilliers, Les Courtelongs, Aux Charmes, Ampelopsis). Saint-Veran is represented by Saint-Veran, Saint-Veran En Pommard, and Saint-Veran Les Creches. The Maconnais range includes Macon-Villages, Macon Vergisson Sur La Roche, and Macon Rouge Les Bruyeres.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Vivien, Lisa, and the Next Generation

The next generation is now active in the estate. Vivien Saumaize, the son, returned in 2012 and took over vinification in 2018. He worked with his father on the early La Marechaude bottlings and has progressively driven the cellar work as the estate's Premier Cru range expanded with the 2020 classification. Lisa Saumaize, the daughter, joined the team in 2020. The generational shift has preserved the estate's biodynamic practice and small-scale parcellary logic while expanding the visibility of the 1er Cru bottlings on export markets. Within the Maconnais quality reference set, Saumaize-Michelin represents the biodynamic Vergisson wing, distinct from the conventional-sustainable approach at peer estates and from the certified-organic-only practice at others; the estate's success has made biodynamics a credible business path for younger Maconnais producers entering the quality reference tier.
