Nitida Cellars

Nitida Cellars is one of the smallest properties in the Durbanville Wine Valley and one of the most distinctive. Owners Bernhard and Peta Veller bought the land in 1990, planted the first vines in 1992, and made their first awarded wine in 1995 (a double-gold Sauvignon Blanc that put the cellar on the South African map almost overnight). Across roughly 37 hectares of farm with around 12 hectares under vine, Bernhard Veller (a qualified engineer turned winemaker) produces a tightly focused portfolio led by Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Methode Cap Classique sparkling wine and the estate's flagship Calligraphy Bordeaux-style red blend. The estate is named for the protea nitida tree that grows on the property, and the hand-drawn labels use inks made from nitida tree leaves and feature local Renosterveld plants and farm creatures.

📜Founding by Bernhard and Peta Veller

Nitida Cellars began as a side project. Bernhard Veller, a qualified engineer, and his wife Peta bought the smallest of the Durbanville farms in 1990 with no firm intention of becoming professional winemakers. In 1992 Bernhard took two weeks off work to plant a small vineyard, expecting to make only a few barrels of wine for the family table. The first plantings did so well, and the early experimental wines were so promising, that the Vellers steadily expanded the project. In 1995 their Sauvignon Blanc won double gold and Nitida was recognised almost simultaneously as a benchmark Semillon producer, two results that effectively committed the family to wine professionally. Bernhard moved across full-time, completed formal wine training and has run the cellar ever since. Today Nitida remains a deliberately small, family-owned and family-operated property, with Bernhard still personally responsible for the winemaking and the Veller family closely involved in every aspect of the estate.

  • Bernhard and Peta Veller bought the Durbanville land in 1990; Bernhard was a qualified engineer with no formal wine training at the time
  • First vines planted 1992 during a two-week vacation; original intention was a few barrels for family consumption
  • 1995 double gold for Sauvignon Blanc and simultaneous recognition as a benchmark Semillon producer launched the cellar professionally
  • Bernhard Veller continues to make the wines personally; Nitida remains a small family-owned and family-operated boutique

🪨Site, Tygerberg Hills and Cool Atlantic Mesoclimate

Nitida sits on the Tygerberg Hills inside the Durbanville Wine of Origin ward, which gained that status in 1989 and lies within the broader Cape Town district. The farm is small even by South African boutique standards: roughly 37 hectares of farm with around 12 hectares under vine. The vineyards are arranged across gently rolling Atlantic-facing slopes that are cooled through the ripening months by the Cape Doctor, the south-easterly summer wind that pushes cold air in from the Atlantic and keeps daytime temperatures measurably lower than the warm interior. Morning sea mist drawn in over the Tygerberg Hills adds further moderation. Soils are dominated by the deep, red, iron-rich Hutton and Glenrosa types that retain winter moisture well, allowing many blocks to be farmed dryland. The combination of cool mesoclimate, retentive soils and small parcel sizes lets Bernhard farm each variety to its own optimal style, with cooler south-facing blocks for Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and warmer aspects for the red varieties.

🥂Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Riesling

Sauvignon Blanc accounts for nearly half of Nitida's plantings and remains the cornerstone of the cellar, with several different bottlings each year that have helped establish Durbanville as one of South Africa's leading cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc origins. Style is intentionally clean and aromatic, with citrus drive, green fig, granadilla and the saline lift that the Cape Doctor wind imparts. Semillon, often barrel-fermented and aged, has been a signature variety since the cellar's earliest recognition in 1995 and produces a textured, lemon-curd and honeysuckle style that ages well. Riesling is one of the more unusual specialities for the Durbanville ward and one of Bernhard Veller's personal favourites: an aromatic, lime-driven dry expression that has built a loyal following over the years. Together these three whites give Nitida an unusually breadth of cool-climate white varieties for so small a producer.

  • Sauvignon Blanc nearly half of all plantings; the cornerstone variety with multiple bottlings each year
  • Semillon often barrel-fermented and aged; a signature variety since the cellar's first major recognition in 1995
  • Riesling is an unusual speciality for the Durbanville ward and one of Bernhard Veller's personal favourites
  • Style emphasises citrus and stone-fruit aromatics, saline lift from the Cape Doctor and a long mineral finish

🍷Calligraphy and the Red Wines

Nitida's flagship red Calligraphy is a Bordeaux-style blend of approximately 35 percent Merlot, 35 percent Cabernet Franc and 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc traditionally driving the aromatic top note. Cabernet Franc is another speciality of the cellar, unusual for the Durbanville ward and reflecting Bernhard Veller's affinity for cooler-climate red varieties. Single-variety Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon also feature in the range, alongside an occasional Pinot Noir and Red Blend, all built for elegance and freshness rather than warm-climate ripeness. Bernhard Veller's stated philosophy is to make wines that are 'elegant, infinitely drinkable and not overwooded, showing the fruit off at its best' - a description that captures the restrained, varietally clean character that runs across every Nitida red. The Calligraphy in particular has built a strong reputation in Platter's, the Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux-style international competitions and on serious South African restaurant lists.

  • Calligraphy is the flagship: approximately 35 percent Merlot, 35 percent Cabernet Franc and 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc is a Nitida signature, unusual for the Durbanville ward; both single-variety Cabernet Franc and Bordeaux blends use it as a structural anchor
  • Single-variety Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the occasional Pinot Noir round out the red portfolio
  • Veller philosophy: elegant, drinkable and not overwooded, showing the fruit at its best

🌿Methode Cap Classique, Labels and Conservation Identity

Nitida also produces a Methode Cap Classique sparkling wine, in keeping with the tradition that has grown up across cool-climate South African cellars over the past decade. The cellar's identity is closely tied to the land it sits on: Nitida is named for the protea nitida tree that grows on the property, and the hand-drawn label illustrations use inks made from nitida tree leaves. The labels feature local Renosterveld plants and some of the farm creatures, in a visual style that reflects the Vellers' commitment to preserving the small remaining areas of Renosterveld on the property and their broader interest in indigenous conservation. The cellar door includes a restaurant, garden and family-friendly visitor offering that has helped build a loyal local following alongside the export business.

Critical Reception and Position in Durbanville

From the 1995 double-gold Sauvignon Blanc onwards Nitida has been treated by South African critics as one of the country's reference small-estate Sauvignon Blanc producers, with multiple Top 100 listings, regular Platter's five-star and four-and-a-half-star awards, and consistent recognition in the Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 competitions. Calligraphy has built a strong reputation in Bordeaux-style international competitions and has appeared on the Top 100 South African Wines list more than once. The cellar is regarded as a quietly serious, craft-scale counterpoint to the larger, branded Durbanville Hills cellar across the valley, and a more varietally adventurous one than next-door Diemersdal (which focuses tightly on Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage). Together with Diemersdal, Durbanville Hills and Bloemendal, Nitida has helped establish Durbanville as a cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc reference in its own right.

Flavor Profile

Nitida's Sauvignon Blancs show citrus zest, green fig, granadilla, gooseberry and fynbos lift, with a clean saline finish that carries the Cape Doctor wind and Tygerberg Hills cool. The Semillon is fuller and rounder with lemon curd, honeysuckle and a textured, slightly waxy mid-palate that often gains complexity from barrel ferment and ageing. The Riesling is dry, aromatic and lime-driven with a mineral backbone. The Calligraphy is medium to full-bodied: red plum, cassis and dark cherry framed by Cabernet Franc's leafy lift and a fine tannin structure, with restrained French oak. Single-variety Cabernet Franc shows red berry perfume and a savoury herbal core, while Merlot leans plummy and supple. The Methode Cap Classique is fresh, citrussy and lightly creamy.
