Kilikanoon Wines

Kilikanoon was founded in 1997 by winemaker Kevin Mitchell, building on a family viticultural legacy that stretches back over four decades. His father, Mort Mitchell, had planted and tended vines long before the winery was established, giving Kilikanoon an immediate connection to mature, expressive fruit. The estate is housed in an original 1860s stone farmhouse in Penwortham, Clare Valley, a region whose winemaking history dates to 1851 when Jesuit settlers first recognized its grape-growing potential. The inaugural vintage produced four wines: Oracle Shiraz, Prodigal Grenache, Blocks Road Cabernet, and Mort's Block Watervale Riesling, wines that remain central to the portfolio today.

Kilikanoon farms 120 hectares of estate vineyards across a dramatic range of elevations, from 220 metres to over 600 metres above sea level. This variation in altitude drives significant differences in ripening and wine style across the estate. The Clare Valley's continental climate with Mediterranean influences delivers warm days and cool nights, producing high diurnal temperature variation that preserves natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Cool afternoon breezes further temper ripening. Soils range from red loam over limestone and terra rossa to black alluvial soils and gravelly loam, giving the winemaking team a diverse palette of terroir to work with.

Red wines account for 85% of Kilikanoon's production, with Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mataro leading the lineup. Whites include Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Semillon. Chief Winemaker Peter Warr, in the role since 2018, follows a minimal intervention philosophy: wines are produced without fining, clarification, or filtering. The flagship Oracle Shiraz has twice won Best Shiraz at international wine shows, and the Attunga 1865 Shiraz is sourced from vines planted more than 150 years ago. Kilikanoon produces over 35% of all Grenache grown in Clare Valley, making it a defining voice for that variety in the region.

Kilikanoon has accumulated a consistent record of critical recognition across Australian and international competitions. The winery has held a James Halliday 5 Red Star rating since 2008 and was named James Halliday Winery of the Year in 2013. It has won Mundus Vini Best Australian Producer eight times. At the 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show, Kilikanoon won 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. The estate is also a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, reflecting an ongoing commitment to responsible farming practices.
