🌍Location and Geography

The Helan Mountain Eastern Foothills sits within Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China, positioned in the 'golden zone' between 37 and 39 degrees north latitude. The Helan Mountain range acts as a natural barrier, blocking cold Siberian air currents and Gobi Desert sandstorms from the west. The Yellow River provides critical irrigation water and moderates temperatures across the valley floor. Vineyards are planted at elevations between 1,000 and 1,300 meters above sea level, with an average of 1,100 to 1,200 meters.

  • Located at 37-39 degrees north latitude, comparable in position to Bordeaux and Napa Valley
  • Helan Mountain shields vineyards from Gobi Desert sandstorms and Siberian cold currents
  • Yellow River irrigation is essential given annual rainfall below 200mm
  • Elevation ranges from 1,000 to 1,300 meters above sea level

☀️Climate and Soils

The region experiences a continental climate with extreme conditions that define its wine character. Annual sunshine hours reach 3,000 to 3,100, and diurnal temperature variation of 12 to 15°C preserves natural acidity and aromatic intensity in the grapes. Active accumulated temperature ranges from 3,400 to 3,800°C across the growing season, and frost-free days number 160 to 180. Annual rainfall stays below 200mm, making Yellow River irrigation essential. Soils are predominantly sierozem, a gray soil type peppered with sand and gravel. Closer to the mountains, alluvial sand and gravel dominate; clay becomes more prevalent on the plains. Soils are highly alkaline with high calcium content, contributing structure and minerality to the wines.

  • 3,000-3,100 annual sunshine hours with diurnal swings of 12-15°C
  • Less than 200mm annual rainfall; irrigation from the Yellow River is essential
  • Sierozem soils with sand and gravel near the mountains, clay on the plains
  • Highly alkaline, calcium-rich soils across the appellation

🍇Grapes and Wine Styles

Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety and the foundation of the region's reputation, typically blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and increasingly Marselan. Red wines are bold, with intense fruit flavors and firm tannins. Marselan, a Cabernet Sauvignon cross developed in France, has found an especially comfortable home here and produces wines of notable depth. White wines from Chardonnay and Riesling show aromatic intensity, high sugar levels, and moderate acidity, a profile driven by the high-elevation sunshine. Syrah is also grown, adding spice and structure to blends.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon blends are predominant across the region
  • Marselan is a rising star variety, performing exceptionally well at this elevation
  • Whites from Chardonnay and Riesling show high sugar levels and aromatic intensity
  • Syrah contributes spice and structure to red blends

📜History and Classification

Modern viticulture in the Helan Mountain Eastern Foothills traces to the 1980s, when Professor Li Hua conducted pioneering terroir research in the area. The Yuquanying winery, established in 1984, was the first large-scale winery in the region. Geographical Indication protection followed in 2003, and from the late 1990s onward, significant government investment transformed former desert into productive vineyards. The region gained global attention when it was included in the World Atlas of Wine 7th edition in 2013, the same year a unique chateau classification system modeled on Bordeaux was established. The Helan Mountain Eastern Foothills was the first appellation in China to adopt official sub-regional designations and remains the only Chinese wine region using a French chateau classification system. A landmark moment came in 2011, when Helan Qingxue's Jia Bei Lan 2009 became the first Chinese wine to win the Decanter World Wine Awards International Trophy.
