Location and Scale
Cole Ranch AVA sits within Mendocino County, California, nested between Russian River and Anderson Valley as part of the broader Mendocino AVA. The appellation covers less than 0.25 square miles, roughly 60 acres, making it the smallest designated wine region in the United States. Its bowl-shaped topography and surrounding hills limit sunlight exposure and contribute to its distinctly cooler, wetter mesoclimate compared to neighboring areas.

- Located between Russian River and Anderson Valley
- Bowl-shaped valley with surrounding hills that provide natural shade
- Cooler and wetter mesoclimate than surrounding Mendocino areas
Climate and Growing Conditions
The high elevation of 1,400 to 1,600 feet drives a cool-climate growing environment with significant diurnal temperature variation, meaning warm days give way to genuinely cool nights. This temperature swing preserves natural acidity in the grapes and extends the growing season considerably. Harvest at Cole Ranch typically runs one month later than in the surrounding Mendocino AVA, allowing for a slow, measured ripening that builds complexity and concentration without sacrificing freshness.
- Elevation: 1,400 to 1,600 feet (427 to 488 meters)
- Significant diurnal temperature variation due to altitude
- Long growing season; harvest one month later than surrounding Mendocino AVA
- Cool nights help retain natural acidity across all varieties grown
Soils and Varieties
Cole Ranch's soil diversity is remarkable for such a small site, encompassing limestone, gravelly-loam, loam, red shale, and gravel. This variety of soil types within a single vineyard enables the cultivation of multiple grape varieties, each finding suitable conditions across the property. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay are all grown here. The Riesling vines, planted in 1973, are among the oldest plantings on the estate; they grow on St. George rootstock, head-trained and dry-farmed.
- Soils include limestone, gravelly-loam, loam, red shale, and gravel
- Diversity of soil types supports a range of grape varieties on one small estate
- Riesling vines date to 1973, planted on St. George rootstock
- Dry-farming and head-training used for the Riesling block
