Location and Setting
Clos de la Fussière sits within the La Fussière climat in Dezize-lès-Maranges, the southernmost of the three Maranges communes and the last appellation of the Côte de Beaune before the Côte Chalonnaise begins. The clos occupies the lower portion of the La Fussière slope, at elevations between roughly 260 and 290 metres. Its south-facing orientation ensures full-day sun exposure, a thermal advantage that compensates for Maranges' position at the cooler, windier southern tip of the Côte de Beaune.
- One of three communes in Maranges: Dezize-lès-Maranges, Sampigny-lès-Maranges, and Cheilly-lès-Maranges
- Situated at the lower section of the La Fussière slope
- South-facing aspect maximises sunlight in a continental climate
- Maranges appellation was formally established in 1988
Soils and Terroir
The vineyard's soils reflect the geological character of the southern Côte de Beaune. Clay-limestone and limestone marl form the base, supplemented by limestone scree and gravelly Bajocian limestone closer to the surface. Bajocian limestone, dating to the Middle Jurassic period, is well-known throughout Burgundy for contributing mineral tension and structure to Pinot Noir. The gravel content aids drainage, keeping vine stress in balance and concentrating flavours even from this modest lower-slope position.
- Clay-limestone and limestone marl base soils
- Limestone scree and gravelly Bajocian limestone at the surface
- Bajocian limestone is a Middle Jurassic formation common in premier and grand cru Burgundy sites
- Gravel content promotes drainage and fruit concentration
History and Monopole Status
Clos de la Fussière is a traditional Burgundian clos, a walled vineyard demarcated within the larger La Fussière climat. The Monnot family has held the vineyard for five generations, making it one of the more deeply rooted family monopoles in the appellation. Monopole status in Burgundy means a single owner controls the entire classified site, offering a rare consistency of vision across every vintage. The Maranges appellation itself is relatively young, having received its AOC designation in 1988, though the vineyards within it have a much longer viticultural history.
- Walled clos set within the larger La Fussière climat
- Monopole owned by Domaine Xavier Monnot for five generations
- Maranges AOC established in 1988
- Monopole status ensures single-producer expression across the entire site

The wines produced from Clos de la Fussière are medium-bodied Pinot Noir with a well-structured profile. Firm tannins and a mineral finish are the structural hallmarks, supported by concentrated wild fruit and sweet spice characters. An earthy quality runs through the wine, consistent with the clay and limestone soils. Compared to Premier Crus from the Côte de Nuits, Maranges wines tend to show a more rustic, grounded character, but the Monnot monopole demonstrates that careful viticulture and winemaking can deliver genuine complexity from this underappreciated corner of Burgundy.
Medium-bodied Pinot Noir with concentrated wild red and dark fruit, earthy undertones, sweet spice, firm tannins, and a mineral, limestone-driven finish.
