History and Founding
Jeremy Ord and Kevin Arnold established Waterford on April 1, 1998, on land that had previously formed part of the Stellenrust property. The winery officially opened in April 2000 under the name Waterford Winery before being renamed Waterford Estate following the granting of Estate status. Kevin Arnold led winemaking from the outset, with Gunter Schultz serving as winemaker from 2001 to 2003 and Francois Haasbroek from 2004 to 2012. Mark le Roux holds the position of Cellar Master today. The estate's flagship wine, The Jem, was introduced in 2006 with the 2004 vintage. In January 2004, the Kevin Arnold Shiraz 2001 was served at Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday celebration.

The Wine and Chocolate pairing experience, created in partnership with chocolatier Richard von Geusau in 2006, was the first of its kind in South Africa. Waterford's red wines are structured and age-worthy, with Bordeaux-style blends showing dark fruit, cedar, and graphite character drawn from ancient granite soils. The Jem flagship delivers complexity and concentration with fine-grained tannins. Shiraz from the estate shows the savoury, spice-driven profile typical of Helderberg sites. Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, particularly from old vines, offer texture and freshness shaped by ocean-cooled growing conditions.
