Vigna Rionda occupies a south-southwest facing amphitheater on the western slopes of Serralunga d'Alba commune, in the southeastern corner of the Barolo zone. The 14-hectare MGA sits on a hillside that descends gently westward toward the Serralunga ridge before continuing down to the village of Castiglione Falletto in the adjacent commune. History and the Bruno Giacosa Era
Vigna Rionda has been a recognized vineyard site since at least the late 19th century, mentioned in Serralunga d'Alba land records as a single-named parcel from the 1880s onward. The Massolino family has farmed Vigna Rionda parcels since the family estate's founding in 1896 and remains the largest single producer in the MGA today. The site's modern collector reputation, however, was established by a different producer: Bruno Giacosa, the legendary Neive-based traditionalist (1929 to 2018), purchased grapes from the Vigna Rionda parcels of the Canale family for several decades from the 1960s through the 1990s, producing Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva in only the very best vintages. Giacosa's 1989 Barolo Collina Rionda Riserva (using the alternative MGA spelling) was awarded a perfect 100 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate, transforming Vigna Rionda from a respected local site into one of the most sought-after collector wines in the world; the 1989 vintage trades for $4,000 to $8,000 plus per bottle at auction today.
