Quinta de Vargellas is Taylor Fladgate's flagship estate in the Douro Superior, acquired between 1893 and 1896 and long regarded as one of the world's great vineyards. It is the source of Taylor's iconic Single Quinta Vintage Port, bottled in non-declared years, as well as the ultra-rare Vinha Velha, made from vines up to 120 years old.

History and Acquisition
Quinta de Vargellas has been celebrated as a source of exceptional Port since at least the 1820s, when records show its wines were already fetching premium prices in the London market. The estate was originally three separate properties: Upper, Middle, and Lower Vargellas. Lower and Middle Vargellas were purchased in 1893 by Taylor Fladgate from Domingos Burguets, the contractor of the Douro railway line, while Upper Vargellas was acquired in 1896 from the Countess of Azambuja, daughter of the legendary Dona Antonia Ferreira of the Ferreira Port house. At the time of purchase, phylloxera had devastated the vineyards and left them in a state of near-total neglect, producing a mere fraction of their former output. The immense task of rebuilding fell to Frank 'Smiler' Yeatman, who led the firm through the early twentieth century. His son Dick Yeatman, who had studied viticulture at Montpellier, continued the work and in 1927 and 1935 established single-variety research plots at Vargellas, work that laid the scientific foundation for the entire Port industry's understanding of classic Douro grape varieties.

Terroir and Vineyard
Quinta de Vargellas sits in the Douro Superior, the easternmost and most arid of the Douro's three sub-regions, where the continental climate produces extreme summer heat, very low rainfall, and conditions ideally suited to the production of concentrated, long-lived Vintage Ports. The soils are the classic Douro schist, a slate-like metamorphic rock with useful water-retention properties that force vine roots deep through fissures in search of moisture, naturally restricting yields and concentrating flavour. The original amphitheatre of terraced vineyard faces predominantly north toward the Douro River, with the planted area ranging from 120 to 320 metres above sea level across approximately 76 hectares. The estate was extended in the 1990s with the addition of the Sao Xisto vineyard, bringing the total property to 191 hectares. The estate has its own private railway station on the Douro line, and the Vinha Velha terraces, whose dry stone walls date back two centuries, have been classified as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Alto Douro Wine Region. A newer sustainable vineyard model developed by viticulturist Antonio Magalhaes and technical director David Guimaraens has been introduced at Vargellas to preserve these historic terraces for future generations.

The Single Quinta Vintage Port
In years when Taylor Fladgate does not declare a classic house Vintage Port, the firm may instead release a Quinta de Vargellas Single Quinta Vintage Port. Made entirely from grapes grown on the Vargellas estate and produced using the same methods as a declared Vintage, including foot-treading in granite lagares, this wine has earned a reputation as arguably the most prestigious Single Quinta Vintage Port in the entire Port trade. It is regarded by critics and collectors as more prestigious and collectable than many shippers' declared Vintages and regularly appears at auction. The wine is typically more approachable in its youth than a classic Taylor Vintage, though it still has the structure to age for many decades. Its hallmark is an extraordinary fragrance, dominated by violet and floral notes intertwined with fine, focused dark fruit, sinewy but well-integrated tannins, and a racingly fresh acidity. In declared years, the finest wines from Vargellas are not bottled as a single quinta but instead contribute to the blend of the classic Taylor Vintage Port, alongside wines from Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco.

Vargellas Vinha Velha: The Ultra-Rare Cuvee
Above and to the west of the Vargellas estate buildings lie the walled terraces of the Vinha Velha, meaning Old Vineyard. These plots represent the original heart of the Vargellas estate and contain some of the oldest vines in the Douro, ranging from approximately 80 to 120 years in age. The Vinha Velha comprises five individual plots: Polverinho, Gricha, Renova do Deposito, Renova do Armazem, and Vinha Grande. With the exception of Polverinho, which contains the single-variety terraces planted by Dick Yeatman in 1927, all plots contain mixed, field-blended plantings of many traditional indigenous varieties, some of which are rarely planted today. Together the Vinha Velha plots account for over 15 percent of the estate's total production, but the grapes selected for the Vinha Velha Vintage Port typically represent only 1 to 2 percent of the whole estate's output, averaging around 5,000 bottles per release. The wine was first produced in 1995 and has since been released only from the 1997, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2017 vintages. It is sold on strict allocation in cases of three bottles and is widely considered one of the rarest and most collectible Vintage Ports in existence.

Head winemaker and technical director David Guimaraens, himself the sixth generation of his family to be involved in the Port trade, oversees production. Legacy and Standing in the Port Trade
Taylor Fladgate, founded in 1692 by English merchant Job Bearsley, is one of the oldest Port houses in existence and the flagship brand of the Fladgate Partnership. The firm is widely regarded as the benchmark producer for Vintage Port, and Quinta de Vargellas is the cornerstone of that reputation. Taylor Fladgate is credited with being the first Port house to release a modern Single Quinta Vintage Port, namely the 1958 Vargellas, released in 1968. Records also indicate that a Quinta de Vargellas Port of vintage date was marketed in London between 1820 and 1829, arguably the first single quinta wine ever produced. The Fladgate Partnership, a family business currently in its eighth generation of the Yeatman family, groups Taylor's together with Fonseca, Croft, and Krohn.
