History and Origins
St Hallett was established in 1944 by the Lindner family, a Barossa institution whose ancestors emigrated from Silesia to the valley in 1838. The estate's viticultural roots run even deeper: the first Shiraz vineyard was planted in 1912. For much of its early history, the winery focused on fortified wines, producing ports, sherries, and marsala. The shift to premium table wines came in the 1970s and 1980s, a transformation shaped by key figures including Robert O'Callaghan, Bob McLean, and Stuart Blackwell, who joined in 1972. Old Block Shiraz, now the estate's most celebrated wine, was first released in 1980. Accolade Wines acquired the producer in 2017.

Location and Terroir
St Hallett is situated in Tanunda, at the heart of the Barossa Valley, close to the Para River. The producer sources all of its fruit from within the Barossa GI, drawing on a range of sub-districts including Lyndoch, Eden Valley, Greenock, Ebenezer, and Seppeltsfield. Soils across these sites range from red and brown clay loams to sandy loams, and the climate combines continental and Mediterranean influences. These conditions are well suited to the slow ripening of old-vine Shiraz, with the estate's vines ranging from 40 to over 100 years old.
