Restless River Wines

Restless River is one of South Africa's most singular and sought-after micro-estates, a family project begun by Craig and Anne Wessels in 2004 on a Hemel-en-Aarde farm with deep family roots. The Wessels' ancestor Wessel Wessels became the first European settler in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in 1760. The estate is home to the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines in the Hemel-en-Aarde, planted in 1999 before the family arrived, and Pinot Noir was added in 2013. Restless River produces only three wines, all single-site and tiny in quantity: the Ava Marie Chardonnay (named for the founders' daughter), the Main Road and Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon, and Le Petit Pinot Noir. Critical acclaim has been substantial: Restless River is recognised as one of the country's emerging icon producers.

📜Founding 2004

Restless River was founded in 2004 by Craig and Anne Wessels, who moved their family from Cape Town to the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The Wessels family connection to the valley is deeper than most: their ancestor Wessel Wessels was the first European settler in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in 1760, more than 250 years before the modern estate was born. The farm Craig and Anne purchased in 2004 was already planted with five hectares of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, both established in 1999. Although the wines from the existing vineyards were initially produced under another label, the Wessels launched the Restless River label in 2012 with their maiden commercial vintage. Pinot Noir was planted in 2013, marking the family's full embrace of the Hemel-en-Aarde's Burgundian heritage alongside their cool-climate Cabernet experiment.

  • Craig and Anne Wessels purchased the farm in 2004 and launched the Restless River label in 2012
  • Wessels family connection to the Hemel-en-Aarde traces to 1760 with ancestor Wessel Wessels, the first European settler in the valley
  • Existing 1999 plantings of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now the oldest such vines in the Hemel-en-Aarde
  • Pinot Noir planted in 2013; first Le Petit Pinot Noir released from the 2016 vintage

👨‍👩‍👧The Wessels Family

Restless River is fundamentally a family project. Craig is the winemaker and viticulturist, Anne handles operations and brand, and the estate is named for the family. The Ava Marie Chardonnay is named for the founders' daughter, giving the flagship white a personal resonance that mirrors the family-run ethos of the estate. The Wessels' decision to make only three wines and only in tiny quantities was deliberate: they wanted to focus on transparency to site rather than build a commercial brand. The estate has grown slowly and remains tightly held; allocations are limited and the wines have become collectors' items. Greg Sherwood MW and Tim Atkin MW have both championed the project, and the estate was named alongside two others in Strauss & Co's 2025 'Three New Icon South African Producers' designation.

🪨Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Vineyards

Restless River's vineyards sit in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley at around 300 metres above sea level. The ward's altitude and granite-influenced soils produce a cooler and more elevated character than the lower Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, which is reflected in the wines. The Ava Marie Chardonnay block is the oldest Chardonnay block in the Hemel-en-Aarde, planted in 1999. The Main Road and Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon blocks are two single vineyards on the same farm: Main Road, 1.59 hectares, and Dignity, 0.71 hectares, both planted in 1999. The Pinot Noir block, planted in 2013, sits adjacent to the older varieties. This combination of mature Chardonnay and Cabernet with younger Pinot Noir gives Restless River an unusual three-way varietal portrait of cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde viticulture.

  • Ava Marie Chardonnay block planted 1999; the oldest Chardonnay block in the Hemel-en-Aarde

  • Pinot Noir block added in 2013; first Le Petit Pinot Noir released 2016

🥂Ava Marie Chardonnay

Ava Marie Chardonnay is the estate's flagship and one of the most singular cool-climate Chardonnays in South Africa. Named for the founders' daughter, the wine is made exclusively from the 1999-planted block on the Restless River farm, which is the oldest Chardonnay block in the Hemel-en-Aarde. The wine is fermented and aged in French oak with restrained new wood, native yeast fermentation, and full malolactic conversion in some vintages. The result is a Chardonnay of significant depth and complexity, balancing the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's cool maritime character with the structural concentration that older vines provide. Greg Sherwood MW has been a long-time champion of Ava Marie, and the wine appears regularly on Tim Atkin MW's top South African Chardonnay lists.

  • Single-vineyard wine from the oldest Chardonnay block in the Hemel-en-Aarde (planted 1999)
  • Named for the founders' daughter Ava Marie
  • French oak fermented and aged with restrained new wood
  • One of the most singular cool-climate Chardonnays in South Africa

🍷Main Road and Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon

The Main Road and Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most unusual premium South African Cabernets and one of the only serious cool-climate Cabernets in the country. The wine is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, blended from two single vineyards on the Restless River farm: Main Road (1.59 hectares) and Dignity (0.71 hectares), both planted in 1999. The wine is matured for 23 months in 225-litre French oak barriques with approximately 25 percent new oak. The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's cool maritime climate produces a Cabernet that is fundamentally different in style from the warm-climate Cabernets of Stellenbosch or the Cape's other premium regions: lower in alcohol, brighter in acidity, with more red and dark cherry fruit, savoury herb and a fine-grained tannin spine rather than the more concentrated, dark-fruited and structurally powerful style of warmer sites. The wine has become one of the cult collector's picks in South African Cabernet.

  • 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from two single vineyards: Main Road (1.59 ha) and Dignity (0.71 ha), both planted 1999

  • One of the only premium cool-climate Cabernets in South Africa

🍇Le Petit Pinot Noir

Le Petit Pinot Noir is the most recent addition to the Restless River range. The vines were planted in 2013, and the first commercial vintage was 2016. Le Petit completes the estate's three-wine portrait of cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde varietal expression, alongside the older Chardonnay and Cabernet plantings. Production is tiny, and the wine is allocated through the estate's small list of supporters and a handful of importers. The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's altitude, granite-influenced soils and cool maritime climate combine to produce a Pinot Noir of bright acidity, lifted aromatic profile and fine-grained tannins, very much in the elegant rather than the powerful school.

  • First commercial vintage 2016
  • Tiny production; allocated through a small list of supporters and importers
  • Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir: bright acidity, lifted aromatic profile and fine-grained tannins
Flavor Profile

Ava Marie Chardonnay shows white peach, citrus, oatmeal and a long mineral finish, with the depth that older vines provide and the cool maritime character of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Main Road and Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon is a singular cool-climate Cabernet with red and dark cherry fruit, savoury herb, cedar and a fine-grained tannin spine, lower in alcohol and brighter in acidity than warm-climate Cape Cabernets. Le Petit Pinot Noir adds lifted aromatic perfume of red cherry, raspberry and dried herb with bright acidity and fine tannins. Across the range, Restless River wines share an elegant rather than powerful identity, with transparency to the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's distinctive cool granite-influenced terroir.
