Newton Johnson Family Vineyards

Newton Johnson Family Vineyards is one of the leading lights of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and a benchmark for site-specific Pinot Noir in South Africa. Founded by Cape Wine Master Dave Johnson and his wife Felicity (nee Newton) in 1995, the family moved to the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde and built a cellar before planting the first vines on their farm. Today the estate is run by second-generation winemaker Gordon Newton Johnson (with his wife Nadia) and his brother Bevan, who oversees commercial operations. The estate produces the Family Vineyards Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the single-vineyard Seadragon Pinot Noir (previously known as Block 6), the Granum Syrah-Mourvedre, the Full Stop Rock Rhone-style red and South Africa's first commercial Albarino.

📜Founding and Move to the Hemel-en-Aarde

Dave Johnson, a Cape Wine Master who wrote his master's thesis on Pinot Noir, and his wife Felicity (nee Newton) launched Newton Johnson in the mid-1990s. The family moved to the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in 1995 and built a cellar before planting any vines, releasing the first vintage in 1997 from bought-in fruit. The decision to settle in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde rather than the better-known Hemel-en-Aarde Valley below was based on the cool maritime climate and granite-influenced soils of the higher terraces, which Dave believed would suit Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The current estate farm was bought in 2001 as virgin land, and the first wines from estate fruit followed in 2009. The Newton Johnson family's Yorkshire roots trace back to wine and spirits importers, and the family has long been involved in the South African wine and spirits trade as merchants and distributors.

👨‍👩‍👧Newton Johnson Family Today

Newton Johnson is now a second-generation family operation. Gordon Newton Johnson and his wife Nadia head the winemaking and viticulture, while his brother Bevan looks after the commercial and operational side of the estate. The brothers have led a deliberate move toward site-specific bottlings since the late 2000s, breaking the family's Pinot Noir down into the more accessible Family Vineyards expression and the single-vineyard Seadragon (formerly Block 6). The estate's tasting room enjoys panoramic views across the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to Walker Bay and Hermanus, and is a popular Hermanus-area destination. Dave and Felicity remain part of the family business but the day-to-day cellar and vineyard work is in the hands of the second generation.

🪨Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Vineyards

Newton Johnson's farm sits in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the highest and most inland of the three Hemel-en-Aarde wards. The Upper Valley is cooler than the lower Hemel-en-Aarde Valley by virtue of altitude, and its soils are more granite-influenced, producing wines with a different aromatic profile and structural feel from those of Hamilton Russell or Bouchard Finlayson lower down. Approximately 15 hectares of vineyards are planted on the estate, with the warmest, rockiest sites at the bottom of the farm dedicated to Syrah and Mourvedre for the Granum blend, and the cooler upper terraces dedicated to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Seadragon Pinot Noir vineyard, planted in 2003, is a single block of clone 113 Pinot Noir on a north-facing terrace at the heart of the farm.

  • Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley sits higher and cooler than the better-known Hemel-en-Aarde Valley below
  • Approximately 15 hectares planted on the estate farm, on granite-influenced soils
  • Coolest upper terraces dedicated to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; warmest rocky bottom of the farm to Syrah and Mourvedre
  • Seadragon (formerly Block 6) vineyard planted in 2003 with clone 113 Pinot Noir on a north-facing terrace

🍷Pinot Noir Bottlings

Pinot Noir is the cornerstone of the Newton Johnson cellar and the wine that has built the estate's reputation. The Family Vineyards Pinot Noir is the everyday flagship, sourced from across the estate's Pinot Noir plantings, and shows red cherry, raspberry and savoury herb with bright acidity and fine tannins. The single-vineyard Seadragon Pinot Noir is the top selection, made from the clone 113 block planted in 2003, and shows more depth, structure and lifted aromatics than the Family Vineyards bottling. The estate also makes the Windansea Pinot Noir from a different single-vineyard site in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, adding a third site-specific expression to the range. Across the Pinot Noir bottlings, the Newton Johnson style emphasises elegance, lifted aromatics and bright structure rather than weight or extraction.

  • Family Vineyards Pinot Noir: the everyday flagship, sourced from across the estate's Pinot Noir plantings
  • Seadragon Pinot Noir: single-vineyard top selection from the 2003-planted clone 113 block
  • Windansea Pinot Noir: another single-vineyard expression from the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
  • House style: elegance, lifted aromatics and bright structure rather than weight

🥂Chardonnay

Family Vineyards Chardonnay is the estate's white flagship, fermented and aged in French oak with the same restrained, terroir-focused approach as the Pinot Noir. The wine shows citrus, white peach and oatmeal with a long mineral finish that reflects the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's cool granite-influenced terroir. The Southend Chardonnay is a single-vineyard expression sourced from a particular block on the estate, presenting a tighter and more linear profile than the Family Vineyards bottling. The Chardonnay style is unmistakably Burgundian-influenced, with restrained oak and a focus on acidity and minerality rather than tropical fruit or richness.

  • Family Vineyards Chardonnay: French oak fermented and aged; the estate's white flagship
  • Southend Chardonnay: single-vineyard expression with tighter and more linear profile
  • Style: restrained Burgundian-influenced, with focus on acidity and minerality
  • Wines from the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde's cool granite-influenced soils

🌶️Syrah, Albarino and Other Wines

Newton Johnson's Syrah and Mourvedre programme is one of the most respected in South Africa. Granum is a 75 percent Syrah and 25 percent Mourvedre blend from echalas-trained (single-stake) vines at the rocky bottom of the estate farm; the wine is peppery, spicy and structured, with cool-climate freshness rather than warm-climate ripeness. Full Stop Rock is the Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, named for the rocky outcrop at the end of the road below the estate. Newton Johnson also released the first commercial South African Albarino from the 2014 vintage, becoming the pioneer of the variety in the Cape. The Albarino shows saline freshness and stone-fruit aromatics from cool-climate Walker Bay sources. The Resonance is a separate white blend that rounds out the range.

  • Granum: 75% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre from echalas-trained vines at the rocky bottom of the farm
  • Full Stop Rock: Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre
  • Albarino: first commercial South African Albarino, released from the 2014 vintage
  • Resonance: a white blend that rounds out the range
Flavor Profile

Newton Johnson Pinot Noir leads with red cherry, raspberry and savoury herb, lifted aromatic perfume and a fine-grained tannin spine. The Seadragon and Windansea single-vineyard bottlings intensify that signature with more depth and structural lift. Family Vineyards Chardonnay shows citrus, white peach and oatmeal with a long mineral finish, while the Southend bottling is tighter and more linear. Granum offers peppery, spicy black cherry and clove with cool-climate freshness rather than warm-climate ripeness, and the Albarino brings saline freshness and stone-fruit aromatics in a distinctively cool-climate Walker Bay register.
