Bodegas Muga
boh-DAY-gahs MOO-gah
Family-run Haro bodega founded in 1932, using oak throughout winemaking and ageing and making its casks in its own cooperage.
Bodegas Muga is a family business founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño, with premises in a two-hundred-year-old building in the Barrio de la Estación (Station Quarter) of Haro in La Rioja. The winery says it uses oak in the entire winemaking and ageing process and is the only bodega in Spain with its own master cooper and three barrel makers. Its range runs from Muga White and Muga Rosado through Muga Reserva, Muga Selección Especial, Prado Enea Gran Reserva, Torre Muga and Aro, plus the Cava Conde de Haro sparkling wines.
Founding and Ownership
Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño. Wine Spectator reports that the family had grown and sold grapes for multiple generations before finding success as a négociant, and Decanter places the 1932 founding in the centre of Haro. Today the premises occupy a two-hundred-year-old building in the Barrio de la Estación (Station Quarter) of Haro in La Rioja, at Avda. Vizcaya, 2. The winery describes itself as a family business run by three generations of the Muga family. According to Decanter, the building was formerly owned by Dionisio de Prado and was known locally as Prado Enea, and the family named its Gran Reserva in homage to that heritage.

Wine Spectator reports that the Mugas' 1,050 acres of estate-owned vineyards supply 60 percent of their production needs. The sustainably farmed vineyards are located primarily near the winery in Haro, in the Rioja Alta subzone, and the rest of the fruit comes from nearly 100 different growers. The winery lists a majority of estate-owned vineyards among its commitments. For Muga Reserva, it cites calcareous clay soils from the tertiary era around Haro, sheltered by the Montes Obarenes and Sierra de Cantabria. Prado Enea comes from calcareous clay and alluvial soils at 550 to 700 metres in the northwest of the Rioja Alta, in villages such as Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche, and its grapes are always the last to be harvested. Torre Muga comes from vines in Villalba de Rioja, Briñas and Labastida. For its whites and rosados the winery draws on the Valle del Oja, with calcareous clay, and the upper Najerilla valley, with ferrous clay soils. The Flor de Muga Rosé comes from Garnacha bush vines between 70 and 90 years old.

House Style and Winemaking
Muga describes its hallmark as combining traditional methods, fining with egg whites and racking by gravity, with the most advanced winemaking techniques, with the aim of producing wines of maximum quality "without compromising the authenticity which defines them." The winery says it uses oak in the entire winemaking and ageing process, and that cask ageing usually lasts between 24 and 36 months depending on the wine. It states that it is the only bodega in Spain with its own master cooper and three barrel makers, who make its casks. Wine Spectator reports that Muga family members travel to France and the U.S. each year to select oak sources, seasoning the wood at the winery before the barrels are made. In a June 2025 winery news item, Isaac Muga said that "ARO 2021 reflects our philosophy of combining tradition and modernity." Decanter writes of Prado Enea that "in recent years, freshness and elegance have gained more prominence, without sacrificing depth and complexity." On sustainability, the winery reports accreditation by Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection, use of the sexual confusion technique against vineyard pests, and nesting boxes for birds and bats.
