Long Shadows Vintners
LONG SHA-dohs
The Allen Shoup collaborative founded 2003 after his retirement from Chateau Ste. Michelle: pairs Washington fruit with internationally renowned winemakers including Agustin Huneeus, Philippe Melka, Randy Dunn, Ambrogio Folonari, Thomas Loosen, and others for vineyard-designated single-varietal bottlings that anchor Washington's international winemaker collaboration commerce.
Long Shadows Vintners, founded 2003 by Allen Shoup (former CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates), is Washington State's most-cited international winemaker collaborative producer. Shoup retired from Ste. Michelle in 2000 and conceived Long Shadows as a multi-winemaker collaborative pairing premium Washington fruit (primarily Walla Walla Valley and Horse Heaven Hills sources) with internationally renowned winemakers from premier wine regions worldwide. The producer's collaborative model assigns specific bottlings to specific winemakers: Pirouette (Bordeaux blend, Agustin Huneeus of Quintessa + Philippe Melka), Feather (Cabernet Sauvignon, Randy Dunn of Howell Mountain), Saggi (Sangiovese-Cabernet Tuscan-influenced blend, Ambrogio Folonari of Tenuta Folonari), Poet's Leap (Riesling, Thomas Loosen of Schloss Lieser, brother of Ernst Loosen of Dr. Loosen Mosel), Sequel (Syrah, John Duval of Penfolds Grange tradition), Pedestal (Merlot, Michel Rolland of Bordeaux consulting), Chester-Kidder (Cabernet Sauvignon, Gilles Nicault of Long Shadows in-house), and Nine Hats (multi-vineyard accessible second-label). The collaborative model has produced one of Washington's most internationally validated producer portfolios. Production is moderate scale (approximately 12,000-15,000 cases per year across all labels).

Allen Shoup and the Post-Ste. Michelle Vision
Allen Shoup served as CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates from 1980 through 2000, overseeing Ste. Michelle's growth from a Pacific Northwest regional producer to one of the largest US wine companies and one of the most influential figures in Washington State wine industry development. Under Shoup's leadership, Ste. Michelle expanded its Washington brand portfolio, established the Stags Leap Wine Cellars partnership (the 1973 Stag's Leap Cabernet that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris was later partnered with Ste. Michelle for the Antinori-influenced Col Solare joint venture and the broader Stags Leap acquisition), and developed the Eroica Riesling joint venture with Dr. Loosen of the Mosel (launched 1999). Shoup retired from Ste. Michelle in 2000 and conceived Long Shadows Vintners as a post-retirement collaborative producer combining premium Washington fruit with internationally renowned winemakers. The Long Shadows founding in 2003 reflected Shoup's vision of Washington wine taking its place in the global premium wine commerce through international winemaker collaborations.

The International Winemaker Roster
Long Shadows' collaborative model assigns specific bottlings to specific winemakers from premier global wine regions. The Pirouette Bordeaux blend is made by Agustin Huneeus (founder of Quintessa in Napa Valley) and Philippe Melka (the prominent Bordeaux-trained Napa consulting winemaker). The Feather Cabernet Sauvignon is made by Randy Dunn (the Howell Mountain Cabernet specialist whose Dunn Vineyards bottlings anchor Napa Valley structural Cabernet reference). The Saggi Sangiovese-Cabernet Tuscan-influenced blend is made by Ambrogio Folonari (of the Tenuta Folonari Tuscany family wine business). The Poet's Leap Riesling is made by Thomas Loosen of Schloss Lieser (the brother of Ernst Loosen of Dr. Loosen Mosel, who anchors the Ste. Michelle Eroica joint venture; the Long Shadows Loosen partnership represents the broader Loosen family's Washington engagement). The Sequel Syrah is made by John Duval of the Penfolds Grange Australian Shiraz tradition; the Pedestal Merlot is made by Michel Rolland (the most prominent Bordeaux consulting winemaker worldwide). The international winemaker roster gives Long Shadows a distinctive multi-perspective producer character.

Gilles Nicault and the In-House Winemaking
Gilles Nicault is Long Shadows' in-house winemaker who anchors the Chester-Kidder Cabernet Sauvignon and provides day-to-day winemaking continuity for the broader Long Shadows lineup. Born and trained in France (Burgundian and Bordelais experience), Nicault joined Long Shadows shortly after the producer's founding and has continuously anchored the operation since. Nicault also serves as the winemaker for Den Hoed Wine Estates' Andreas Cabernet Sauvignon (the Wallula Vineyard-sourced flagship of the Den Hoed family operation), representing one of Walla Walla / Horse Heaven Hills wine commerce's most prominent winemaker cross-affiliations. The Chester-Kidder Cabernet Sauvignon (named for Allen Shoup's mother and grandmother) anchors the Long Shadows portfolio's in-house identity. Nicault's Burgundian-trained sensibility combined with the various visiting-winemaker collaborations across the Long Shadows portfolio produces a multi-influenced stylistic register that distinguishes the producer from single-winemaker WA operations. The Nine Hats second-label brand provides accessible-tier Long Shadows-style wines from broader-source fruit at more affordable price tier.

Long Shadows' fruit sourcing centers on premium Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, and broader Columbia Valley vineyards. The Walla Walla Valley sources include Pepper Bridge Vineyard, SeVein highland complex, and other premier Walla Walla sites for the Pirouette, Pedestal, Sequel, and broader red Bordeaux + Syrah lineup. The Horse Heaven Hills sources are anchored by Wallula Vineyard (the Den Hoed family vineyard supplying the Pirouette plus the Saggi Sangiovese-Cabernet blend) and Champoux Vineyard (the heritage 1972 planting). The Riesling lineup (Poet's Leap) sources from cool-climate northern Yakima Valley and Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley sites. The fruit-sourcing model uses long-term grower partnerships rather than estate-vineyard ownership; the partnerships ensure access to premium vineyard sources without requiring substantial estate acquisition. The premium-sourcing approach plus the international winemaker roster produces Long Shadows' multi-perspective international-influenced stylistic register that distinguishes it from estate-focused or single-source Washington producers.
