Glaetzer Wines
How to say it
Ben Glaetzer's third-generation Barossa boutique producing concentrated, structured Shiraz from old-vine Ebenezer district plantings, with the iconic Amon-Ra at the top of the range.
Glaetzer Wines was founded in 1995 by Ben Glaetzer, third-generation winemaker and son of legendary Barossa figure Colin Glaetzer (of Barossa Valley Estate fame). The estate sources from old-vine Shiraz blocks in the Ebenezer district of the western Barossa, including plantings from the 1880s. Ben Glaetzer's flagship wine Amon-Ra, named for the ancient Egyptian sun god, is one of Australia's most internationally awarded modern Shiraz wines, scoring consistently in the highest tier of international wine criticism and building a substantial global cult following. The boutique produces approximately 50,000 cases per year across the tiered range.

Glaetzer Family Wine Heritage
The Glaetzer family has been central to Barossa Valley winemaking for three generations. Eric Glaetzer was chief winemaker at Saltram for decades through the mid-20th century, working through the era when Australian wine transitioned from a fortified-dominated to a premium table wine industry. His son Colin Glaetzer joined Barossa Valley Estate as chief winemaker in 1969 and was named Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2002, recognising decades of work that helped redefine Barossa Shiraz quality. Ben Glaetzer, Colin's son, trained alongside his father at Barossa Valley Estate before establishing his own boutique in 1995 at age 23. The Glaetzer Wines project was Ben's vehicle for producing wines under his own name, drawing on the family's deep knowledge of the western Barossa terroir and especially the Ebenezer district where the most concentrated old-vine Shiraz plantings sit. The boutique has grown steadily through three decades, building international recognition for the Amon-Ra flagship and the broader range.
- Eric Glaetzer: chief winemaker at Saltram through mid-20th century; first generation
- Colin Glaetzer: chief winemaker at Barossa Valley Estate from 1969; Australian Winemaker of the Year 2002
- Ben Glaetzer: third generation; founded Glaetzer Wines in 1995 at age 23 after training with father
- Family lineage: three generations of Glaetzer winemakers central to Barossa Valley premium production
Ebenezer District and Vineyards
The Ebenezer district sits in the far western Barossa Valley, on a series of red-brown earth ridges with significant ironstone content. The area is one of the warmer microclimates within the Barossa GI and is known for producing Shiraz of unusual concentration, deep colour, ripe phenolics, and powerful structure. Glaetzer sources principally from Ebenezer vineyards including old-vine Shiraz plantings dating from the 1880s, with subsequent additions through the early and mid-20th century. The vines are dry-grown and ungrafted on pre-phylloxera rootstocks, protected by South Australia's strict quarantine. Old-vine yields are low (around 2 to 3 tonnes per hectare for the premium parcels), with the small concentrated berries that the Ebenezer district is famous for. Beyond the Ebenezer flagship sources, Glaetzer also draws from other western Barossa parcels for the broader range. The estate does not own all of its source vineyards but maintains long-term grower relationships with the Ebenezer landowners.
- Ebenezer district: far western Barossa Valley; red-brown earth over ironstone; warm microclimate
- Shiraz plantings from the 1880s, with subsequent 20th-century additions; dry-grown, ungrafted
- Old-vine yields 2-3 t/ha; small concentrated berries are the district's hallmark
- Long-term grower relationships rather than full estate ownership; supplemented by other western Barossa parcels
Winemaking and Amon-Ra
Ben Glaetzer's winemaking emphasises concentration, structure, and oak integration appropriate to the powerful Ebenezer fruit. Amon-Ra, the estate's flagship, is made from selected old-vine Ebenezer Shiraz blocks. The wine is hand-harvested at relatively ripe phenolic maturity, fermented in open vessels with selected yeast strains, pumped over rather than punched down, then pressed and aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in French and American oak hogsheads with a substantial new oak proportion (around 80 percent new for the flagship). The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, preserving the deep colour and concentration that define the Amon-Ra style. The other wines in the range — including Bishop Shiraz, Wallace Shiraz Grenache Mataro, and Anaperenna Shiraz Cabernet — follow a similar concentrated, structured approach with varying oak treatments calibrated to the cuvée. Robert Parker has been a particular advocate, awarding Amon-Ra 96 to 100 points across multiple vintages and helping build the wine's international cult following.
- Amon-Ra: hand-harvested old-vine Ebenezer Shiraz; selected yeast fermentation; pump-over cap management
- 16-18 months in French and American oak hogsheads with ~80% new oak (substantial proportion)
- Bottled unfiltered and unfined; preserves deep colour and concentration
- Robert Parker: 96-100 points across multiple Amon-Ra vintages; James Halliday: 97-99 consistent

Glaetzer's range is tiered around different Shiraz expressions and structured blends. Bishop Shiraz is the entry to the boutique style, sourced from western Barossa old-vine fruit at a more accessible price point. Anaperenna is a Shiraz-Cabernet blend at the premium tier, offering Australian Cabernet-Shiraz structure with concentrated Barossa fruit. Amon-Ra Unfiltered Shiraz sits at the top of the range as the flagship single-vineyard expression. Smaller-production cuvées appear in standout vintages. Total production across the range is approximately 50,000 cases per year, supporting wide Australian distribution and meaningful export presence in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, and continental Europe. International Recognition
Glaetzer Wines is among the most internationally awarded modern Australian Shiraz producers. Robert Parker has been a particular long-time advocate, with Amon-Ra scoring 96 to 100 points across multiple vintages in the Wine Advocate; the 2002 vintage received Parker's first 100-point score for an Australian Shiraz, a milestone widely cited as opening international fine wine markets to a new generation of Barossa producers. James Halliday has consistently rated Amon-Ra at 97-99 points in the Halliday Wine Companion. Other critics including Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and the international fine wine media have similarly given the wine consistent recognition at the highest tier. The combination of Parker scores, accessible (though not inexpensive) pricing relative to other 100-point Australian wines, and consistent vintage-to-vintage quality has driven the wine's substantial international cult status, particularly in the United States and Asia where Australian premium Shiraz has historically been the focus of international fine wine collecting attention.
- Robert Parker: 96-100 points across multiple Amon-Ra vintages; 2002 vintage received Parker's first 100-point score for an Australian Shiraz
- James Halliday: 97-99 points consistently in the Halliday Wine Companion

Glaetzer Amon-Ra Unfiltered Shiraz presents deep, almost black colour with viscous body; aromatics of intense ripe blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, dark chocolate, mocha, vanilla and coconut from American oak component, with savoury undertones of leather and tar developing with age; the palate is full-bodied and concentrated with ripe but firm tannins, balanced acidity, and a long warm finish; alcohol typically 14.5 to 15.5 percent. The wine is a powerful, concentrated, internationally appealing modern Barossa Shiraz style designed for impact and cellaring (20 to 30 years). Bishop Shiraz offers a more accessible expression at the entry tier with similar dark fruit profile and softer tannin structure. Wallace blends Grenache and Mataro into the Shiraz frame for added aromatic complexity. Anaperenna brings Cabernet structure into the blend for a more Bordeaux-leaning profile.
