History and Name
Florimont takes its name from the French and Latin for 'mountain of flowers,' a reference to the wildflowers that cover the hillside throughout the growing season. The site was known historically by its German equivalent, Blumberg. Viticulture here dates to Roman times, and by the Middle Ages the vineyard had earned the appreciation of local nobility, including the lords of Hohlandsberg castle and the influential Baron de Schwendi. The Grand Cru was officially recognized on December 17, 1992.
- Roman-era viticulture documented on the site
- German name Blumberg translates directly to 'flower mountain'
- Favored by Hohlandsberg lords and Baron de Schwendi during the Middle Ages
- Anemones blanket the hillside in March; wild orchids appear in June
Location and Terroir
Florimont sits at 250 to 280 metres elevation across the communes of Ingersheim and Katzenthal, on the central Alsace slope north of Colmar. The aspect is primarily east-facing with some southerly exposure, maximizing morning sun and extending the ripening window well into autumn. Soils are marl-limestone in character, relatively pebbly, and contain fossil deposits that speak to the site's ancient marine origins. These calcareous, minerally active soils are well-suited to producing wines with both concentration and freshness.
- East-facing with partial south exposure at 250 to 280 metres
- Marl-limestone soils with fossil deposits and pebbly texture
- Communes: Ingersheim and Katzenthal
- Total classified area: 21 hectares
Climate
Alsace benefits from the rain shadow of the Vosges Mountains, and Florimont exemplifies this. Annual rainfall is approximately 550mm, making it one of the drier vineyard climates in France. Warm springs encourage early vine growth, dry summers concentrate sugars and flavors, and long autumns allow extended hang time for optimal phenolic and aromatic development. The site accumulates 1,725 hours of sunlight per year, a figure that supports full physiological ripeness while the site's elevation and marl soils help preserve natural acidity.
- Approximately 550mm annual rainfall
- 1,725 hours of sunlight per year
- Warm springs, dry summers, and long autumns
- Continental climate moderated by Vosges rain shadow
