History and Origins
The Schoffit family has been involved in viticulture since 1599, making them one of Alsace's longest-established wine dynasties. The domaine was formally constituted as a wine producer by Robert Schoffit in 1973. The pivotal chapter came in the 1980s and 1990s, when Bernard Schoffit began acquiring abandoned parcels in Rangen de Thann, a site that had been nearly destroyed during World War I and left largely unfarmed due to its extreme steepness. Bernard worked alongside Léonard Humbrecht as a recognised pioneer in reclaiming the Rangen from the 1970s onwards. Today, Bernard's grandson Alexandre Schoffit serves as co-owner, continuing the family's long commitment to the estate.

Vineyards and Terroir
The domaine's most prestigious holding is its 6.5 hectares in Rangen de Thann Grand Cru, which includes the monopole Clos Saint-Théobald. Rangen is planted on volcanic rock and siliceous soils at elevations reaching 450 metres, with slopes of up to 55 degrees making it one of the most physically demanding vineyards in all of France. Despite its altitude, Rangen is considered one of the warmest plots in Alsace due to its south-facing aspect and heat-retaining volcanic soils. The domaine also holds 0.2 hectares in Sommerberg Grand Cru, where granite soils dominate, as well as further parcels in Harth (gravelly alluvial soils with loess) and the Colmar area.
- Rangen de Thann: volcanic and siliceous soils, slopes up to 55 degrees, elevations to 450 metres
- Sommerberg Grand Cru: 0.2 hectares on granite soils
- Harth: gravelly alluvial soils with loess deposits
- Clos Saint-Théobald is a monopole, meaning Schoffit is the sole owner within Rangen de Thann
Viticulture and Winemaking
The domaine practices organic viticulture across all its holdings, with a biodynamic conversion currently underway. No fruit is purchased; every wine is produced entirely from estate-grown grapes. Grapes cultivated include Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Chasselas. The Chasselas vines, planted between 1939 and 1954, are among the oldest examples of this variety remaining in Alsace. The winemaking philosophy centres on expressing individual terroir through varietal wines, producing dry whites, late harvest styles, and Crémant d'Alsace.
- Certified organic; biodynamic conversion underway
- All wines produced exclusively from estate vineyards
- Chasselas vines planted 1939 to 1954 are among Alsace's oldest
- Styles include dry whites, Vendange Tardive, Sélection de Grains Nobles, and Crémant d'Alsace

Schoffit produces Grand Cru bottlings from both Rangen de Thann and Sommerberg. The Rangen de Thann Grand Cru carries significant prestige as one of Alsace's most distinctive and physically extreme sites, and the domaine's monopole position within Clos Saint-Théobald gives it an exclusive identity found nowhere else in the appellation. Grand Cru wines are produced from Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer, the permitted varieties under Alsace Grand Cru regulations.
- Grand Cru designations: Rangen de Thann and Sommerberg
- Clos Saint-Théobald monopole offers a unique single-ownership expression of Rangen terroir
- Grand Cru varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer
- Late harvest wines produced under Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles categories
Rangen Rieslings show pronounced mineral intensity with volcanic and smoky notes underpinned by high natural acidity and considerable structure. Pinot Gris from Rangen tends to be rich and textured with spice and stone fruit. Sommerberg Rieslings lean more towards floral aromatics and citrus purity on granite. Late harvest wines deliver concentrated stone fruit, honey, and botrytis complexity with remarkable acidity for balance.
