Priorat vs Ribera del Duero
Catalonia's slate-bound DOQ, one of two Spanish DOCa appellations, set against Ribera del Duero's Tempranillo plateau between 720 and more than 1,000 metres.
Spain's agriculture ministry (MAPA) register of wine PDOs, updated 2 July 2026, lists Priorat / Priorato with the traditional term DOCa, one of only two alongside Rioja, while Ribera del Duero is listed as a DO. INCAVI, the Catalan wine institute, records that the Denominació d'Origen Priorat was created by Ministerial Order in 1932 and that the qualified seal was granted in 2000; Ribera del Duero's Consejo Regulador records that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food granted its Denominación de Origen on 21 July 1982. The two differ sharply in scale: MAPA's 2022/2023 campaign report lists 2,237 hectares of registered vineyard in Priorat and 26,744 in Ribera del Duero. Priorat's recommended red varieties are Garnacha and Cariñena, grown on slate that the pliego de condiciones calls licorella, while Ribera del Duero's reds must contain at least 75% Tempranillo.
The Consell Regulador traces Priorat's winegrowing to the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei, who brought knowledge and techniques from Provence in the 12th century. INCAVI records that the Denominació d'Origen Priorat was created by Ministerial Order in 1932, that its first Reglament was approved in 1954, and that the Denominació d'Origen Qualificada seal was granted in 2000. The Consell Regulador dates the start of a new cycle of prosperity to the end of the 1980s.
The Consejo Regulador cites wine residues found at the Vaccaean site of Pintia, in Padilla de Duero, as evidence that wine was known in the region 2,500 years ago. Its first minutes date from 23 July 1980, and on 21 July 1982 the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food granted Ribera del Duero its Denominación de Origen. Jancis Robinson writes that Vega Sicilia gained some recognition for the intensity of its wines only at the end of the 19th century, and that it was not until the mid 1980s that Alejandro Fernández of Bodegas Pesquera established the region as a source of high-quality, long-lived wines.
The pliego places Priorat in the centre of the province of Tarragona, 25 km from the sea in the Prelitoral range, bounded to the north by the Sierra de Montsant, and gives the zone 17,629 hectares, of which 2,429.20 are excluded from vine growing. The Consell Regulador counts 12 grape-growing zones: ten villages plus Masos de Falset and Solanes del Molar. MAPA's 2022/2023 report lists 2,237 hectares of registered vineyard, 509 growers and 116 registered wineries.
Ribera del Duero sits on the northern Castilian meseta where Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid meet in Castilla y León, and the pliego describes a wine strip about 115 km long and 35 km wide with the Duero as its axis. The Consejo Regulador counts 118 unidades poblacionales: 64 in Burgos, 5 in Segovia, 25 in Soria and 24 in Valladolid. MAPA's 2022/2023 report lists 26,744 hectares of registered vineyard, 7,495 growers and 345 registered wineries.
The pliego describes a climate marked by notable day-night temperature swings, with the Sierra de Montsant sheltering the zone from cold north winds, a mean annual temperature of 14 to 15 degrees and average annual rainfall of 400 to 500 litres per square metre. The Consell Regulador puts vineyards between 100 metres, in the lower parts of Bellmunt del Priorat and el Molar, and 750 metres in the highlands of La Morera de Montsant and Porrera; INCAVI gives 60 to 700 metres.
The Consejo Regulador describes a Mediterranean climate whose primary trait is continentality, with dry summers, long harsh winters, rainfall below 400 mm a year and temperatures ranging from -20 to 42 °C, and places the vineyards between 720 and more than 1,000 metres. The pliego records day-night differences of 15 to 20 °C during ripening and a frost-risk period running from 17 September to 6 June.
The pliego describes soils dominated by slates called licorella, mainly Devonian and Carboniferous slates formed between 416 and 318 million years ago. The soils are shallow, usually a single horizon with bedrock about 10 to 15 cm below the surface and little organic matter, and vine roots push between the slate's laminar sheets in search of moisture, water and nutrients. INCAVI says slate forms practically 90% of the subsoil of the DO's villages, and that the dark licorella absorbs radiation and returns heat to the plant.
The pliego describes a basin formed during the Miocene whose sediments are mostly silty or clayey sands alternating with layers of limestone, marl and calcareous concretions, generally with basic pH and little organic matter. The Consejo Regulador describes three main soil types: fine reddish-brown soils that retain water, white soils rich in calcareous salts, and stony soils that retain none. Susie Barrie MW writes in Decanter that alternating limestone, sand and clay can be seen across even the tiniest plots.
The Consell Regulador lists Grenache (Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena) as Priorat's recommended red varieties, with permitted reds including Hairy Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, and INCAVI names Garnacha Blanca as the most widespread white. The pliego sets red wine at a minimum of 13.5% vol and caps yields at 6,000 kg per hectare for red varieties and 8,000 kg for white.
Ribera del Duero's pliego authorises Tempranillo (Tinto Fino or Tinta del País), Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Malbec, Merlot and Albillo Mayor, with Tempranillo the principal variety for reds and Albillo Mayor for whites. Reds must contain at least 75% Tempranillo and whites at least 75% Albillo Mayor. The pliego sets red wine at a minimum of 11.5% vol and caps yields at 7,000 kg per hectare for all varieties except Albillo Mayor, at 9,500 kg.
The Consell Regulador's 'names of the land' classification rises from DOQ Priorat through Vins de Vila and Paratge wines to Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada. The pliego ties each tier to vine age, yield and grape mix: Vi de Vila needs 90% of the vines older than 10 years, paratge 90% older than 15 years, and vinya classificada 80% older than 20 years, each with at least 60% Cariñena and/or Garnacha, while gran vinya classificada needs 80% of the vines older than 35 years, at least 90% Cariñena and/or Garnacha, and a cap of 3,000 kg per hectare for red varieties. Miquel Hudin counts 459 delimited paratges in Decanter.
Ribera del Duero's pliego builds its ladder on ageing: red Crianza needs at least 24 months with 12 in oak, red Reserva 36 months with at least 12 in oak and the rest in bottle, and red Gran Reserva 60 months with at least 24 in oak and the rest in bottle, in barrels of at most 330 litres. Wines labelled Roble or Barrica spend at least three months in barrels of up to 600 litres. Labels may name one of the unidades poblacionales when 85% of the grapes come from it, although Susie Barrie MW writes in Decanter that no neat sub-regional distinctions like Rioja's exist for Ribera.
The pliego credits Priorat's steep slopes, licorella soils, day-night temperature swings and low rainfall with low production, small concentrated bunches and slow ripening, and says these factors give the wines concentration, body and structure. It puts yields at around one kilogram of grapes per vine on average. INCAVI describes the reds, made mainly from Cariñena and Garnacha, as fleshy and rotund, with a high concentration of very complex aromas.
Ribera del Duero's pliego describes red Crianza as showing red and/or black fruit alongside oak aromas at least at medium level, balanced, with sufficient acid freshness and medium to high body and persistence. Susie Barrie MW names firm tannic structure, marked acidity and high alcohol as hallmarks of Ribera's wines, and writes that traditional styles generally use more American oak while modern styles use more, newer French oak.
Writing in Decanter, Miquel Hudin reports that the first three wines classified at the top gran vinya classificada level were Álvaro Palacios's L'Ermita, Vall Llach's Mas de la Rosa and Mas Doix's 1902 Tossal d'en Bou, and that Mas de la Rosa was planted in 1906 and Tossal d'en Bou in 1903. His selection lists Clos Mogador as a Priorat Vinya Classificada.
Jancis Robinson writes that Aalto, Alión, Alonso del Yerro, Emilio Moro, Pago de Carraovejas, Pesquera, Dominio de Pingus and Vega Sicilia have all produced some fine wine, and that Vega Sicilia matures wine in small barrels for years longer than any other producer she knows. Susie Barrie MW describes Aalto as the creation of Mariano García, winemaker for 30 years at Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former head of the Consejo Regulador.
Reach for Priorat for Garnacha and Cariñena from shallow licorella slate on steep slopes, where the pliego credits low yields and slow ripening with concentration, body and structure, and where labels can step from a village to a paratge or a classified vineyard. Reach for Ribera del Duero for Tempranillo from a continental plateau between 720 and more than 1,000 metres, ranked on the label by time in oak and bottle from Roble to Gran Reserva; Susie Barrie MW's advice is to choose a wine from a good vintage and from a name you trust.
- Status: MAPA's register lists Priorat / Priorato as a DOCa (in Catalan, DOQ Priorat), one of two alongside Rioja; Ribera del Duero is a DO, granted on 21 July 1982. INCAVI dates the Denominació d'Origen Priorat to 1932 and its qualified seal to 2000.
- Grapes: Priorat's recommended reds are Garnacha and Cariñena. Ribera del Duero reds need at least 75% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino, Tinta del País), with Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Malbec, Merlot and Albillo Mayor also authorised.
- Soils: Priorat's licorella is mainly Devonian and Carboniferous slate, in shallow soils with bedrock about 10 to 15 cm down. Ribera del Duero's Miocene basin holds silty or clayey sands alternating with limestone, marl and calcareous concretions.
- Classification: Priorat ranks by place, from DOQ Priorat through Vi de Vila and Paratge to Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada (80% of vines older than 35 years, at least 90% Cariñena and/or Garnacha). Ribera del Duero ranks red wines by ageing: Crianza 24 months (12 in oak), Reserva 36 months (12 in oak), Gran Reserva 60 months (24 in oak), in barrels of at most 330 litres.
- Numbers: MAPA's 2022/2023 report lists Priorat at 2,237 ha, 509 growers and 116 wineries, and Ribera del Duero at 26,744 ha, 7,495 growers and 345 wineries. Minimum alcohol for red wine is 13.5% vol in Priorat and 11.5% vol in Ribera del Duero.
