Clos de la Rougeotte
kloh duh lah roo-ZHOT
A half-hectare walled monopole in Volnay, producing some of the Côte de Beaune's most precise and elegant Pinot Noir.
Clos de la Rougeotte is a 0.5-hectare Premier Cru monopole in Volnay, exclusively farmed by Domaine François Buffet since 2009. This southeast-facing clos sits on limestone, marl, and clay soils and produces classic Volnay in its most delicate, floral form. It should not be confused with Fremiets Clos de la Rougeotte, a separate 1.5-hectare site owned by Bouchard Père et Fils.
- Classified Volnay Premier Cru in the Côte de Beaune
- Total area: 0.5 hectares (1.3 acres), one of Volnay's smallest Premier Crus
- Currently a monopole of Domaine François Buffet, producing here since the 2009 vintage
- Southeast-facing aspect at 230 to 380 meters elevation
- Soils composed of limestone, marl, and clay
- A true clos, meaning the vineyard is enclosed by a stone wall
- Distinct from Fremiets Clos de la Rougeotte, a 1.5-hectare site within the Fremiets vineyard held by Bouchard Père et Fils
Location and Classification
Clos de la Rougeotte sits within the commune of Volnay in the Côte de Beaune, one of Burgundy's most celebrated red wine villages. The vineyard carries Premier Cru status and covers just 0.5 hectares, making it among the smallest classified sites in the appellation. Its southeast-facing slope captures morning sun and benefits from the cool continental climate that defines this stretch of the Côte d'Or, with cold winters, warm summers, and meaningful day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the fruit.
- Appellation: Volnay Premier Cru, Côte de Beaune
- Elevation: 230 to 380 meters above sea level
- Aspect: Southeast-facing
- Area: 0.5 hectares (1.3 acres)
Soils and Terroir
The soils at Clos de la Rougeotte combine limestone, marl, and clay, a composition typical of Volnay's Premier Cru band. The limestone parent rock provides drainage and reflects heat, while the clay fraction retains just enough moisture to sustain the vines through warm summers. Marl adds mineral complexity and contributes to the fine-grained tannin structure that distinguishes well-made Volnay from its neighbors. Together, these elements produce wines with notable precision and a mineral thread running through the fruit.
- Limestone: provides drainage and contributes to mineral character
- Marl: supports tannin finesse and textural complexity
- Clay: retains moisture and adds body to the wine
History and Ownership
As its name signals, Clos de la Rougeotte is a walled vineyard, a physical enclosure that historically denoted careful stewardship and often ecclesiastical or aristocratic ownership. The site was previously in the hands of Domaine Henri Boillot before passing to Domaine François Buffet, which has held it as a monopole and vinified the wine commercially starting with the 2009 vintage. A common point of confusion is the existence of a similarly named site called Fremiets Clos de la Rougeotte, which is a 1.5-hectare subsection within the larger Fremiets Premier Cru vineyard and is owned by Bouchard Père et Fils. These are entirely separate parcels with different owners, sizes, and vineyard contexts.
- Previously owned by Domaine Henri Boillot
- Current monopole holder: Domaine François Buffet, from the 2009 vintage onward
- The clos wall is a defining physical and historical feature of the site
- Not to be confused with Fremiets Clos de la Rougeotte, a Bouchard Père et Fils monopole within a different Premier Cru

Only Pinot Noir is grown at Clos de la Rougeotte, as is standard across Volnay's Premier Cru vineyards. The wines follow the classic Volnay profile: light in color, silky in texture, and lifted by red fruit and floral aromatics, with mineral notes emerging on the finish. Compared to the more structured Premiers Crus of Pommard just to the south, Volnay wines, and Clos de la Rougeotte in particular, lean toward elegance and finesse over power. The small parcel size means production is extremely limited, and bottles from Domaine François Buffet rarely appear outside specialist retailers and auction.
- Sole grape variety: Pinot Noir
- Style: light, elegant, fine-textured with red fruit, floral, and mineral character
- Very limited production given the 0.5-hectare size
- Domaine François Buffet is the only producer of this specific clos
Classic Volnay in style: translucent ruby in color with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, violet, and dried rose. The palate is light to medium in body with silky, fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a mineral, earthy finish. Floral notes persist through the mid-palate, and the wine shows more delicacy and precision than weight.
