History and Name
The vineyard takes its name from François d'Audignac, who owned the Pousse d'Or manor house in the period following the French Revolution. The name Clos d'Audignac is also seen in historical references. The vineyard sits at the southern end of Volnay village and is, in the most literal sense, the manor's front garden, enclosed by the stone wall typical of a true Burgundian clos. This intimate relationship between estate and vineyard has persisted, with Domaine de la Pousse d'Or retaining full ownership and production rights as a monopole.
- Named after François d'Audignac, post-revolutionary proprietor of the adjacent manor
- Alternate name 'Clos d'Audignac' appears in some historical records
- A genuine clos: physically enclosed by a stone wall
- Located at the southern tip of Volnay village
Terroir and Vineyard
Clos de l'Audignac covers just 1.1 hectares with a northeastern aspect, which is less typical than the easterly and southeasterly exposures found across much of the Côte de Beaune. The soils are a combination of marl and limestone-clay scree, providing good drainage alongside the mineral richness associated with Volnay's Premier Cru sites. The continental climate of Burgundy governs the growing season, with cold winters, warm summers, and the ever-present risk of spring frost and harvest-time rain. Pinot Noir is the sole permitted and planted variety.
- Northeastern aspect, less common in Côte de Beaune Premier Crus
- Soils: marl with limestone-clay scree
- Continental Burgundian climate
- Pinot Noir is the exclusive grape variety
Wine Style
Wines from Clos de l'Audignac are characterised by depth and concentration, with dark fruit, liquorice, and tar at the core. The firm tannin structure sets this cuvée apart from the more delicate, floral style associated with many Volnay Premier Crus. The northeastern aspect and clay-rich soils contribute to this fuller, more structured profile. As with all Volnay Premier Crus, the wine is exclusively red Pinot Noir.
- Dark fruit, liquorice, and tar on the palate
- Deep and concentrated style with firm tannins
- Fuller-bodied compared to many Volnay Premier Crus
- Structured for medium to long-term cellaring
