Domaine Leflaive's de facto monopole in Puligny-Montrachet, producing mineral-driven Chardonnay of precision and elegance.
Le Clavoillon is a 5.6-hectare Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet, owned almost entirely by Domaine Leflaive. Situated on the lower slopes of the Côte d'Or escarpment, its clay-limestone soils produce Chardonnay of notable mineral intensity and bright acidity. Leflaive holds 4.8 hectares, making this one of Burgundy's closest equivalents to a monopole.

Location and Terroir
Le Clavoillon sits on the lower slope of the Côte d'Or escarpment in Puligny-Montrachet, at just over 500 meters above the village. The soils are argilo-calcaire, a classic Burgundian clay-limestone combination that provides both water retention and mineral character to the wines. The lower-slope position distinguishes Clavoillon from the grand cru vineyards situated higher on the hill, and this placement contributes to the vineyard's particular style: wines that are elegant and precise rather than overpowering, with a strong mineral backbone supported by ripe citrus and stone fruit.
- Lower escarpment position on the Côte d'Or
- Clay-limestone (argilo-calcaire) soils
- Continental climate with warm summers and cold winters
- Exclusively Chardonnay planted across the site
History
Before the phylloxera epidemic swept through Burgundy in the late 19th century, Clavoillon was planted to Pinot Noir. The vineyard was replanted with Chardonnay in the early 20th century, aligning it with the white wine identity that Puligny-Montrachet has since become famous for. Domaine Leflaive began accumulating holdings in Clavoillon over the course of the 20th century and now controls 4.8 of the vineyard's 5.6 to 6 hectares, a concentration of ownership that is exceptional for Burgundy, where fragmentation is the norm.
- Originally planted to Pinot Noir prior to phylloxera
- Replanted to Chardonnay in the early 20th century
- Domaine Leflaive now holds over 85% of total vineyard area
Domaine Leflaive and the Near-Monopole
Domaine Leflaive's 4.8-hectare holding in Le Clavoillon makes this vineyard one of the most concentrated single-producer sites in the Côte de Beaune outside of a formal monopole designation. In a region where a single producer controlling even 30 to 40 percent of a premier cru is noteworthy, Leflaive's dominance here is remarkable. The domaine has long practiced biodynamic viticulture, and Clavoillon is among its flagship premier cru bottlings, sitting just below the estate's grand cru holdings in Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet in terms of prestige and price.
- Domaine Leflaive controls 4.8 of approximately 5.6 to 6 total hectares
- Leflaive practices biodynamic viticulture across all its holdings
- Clavoillon is a key premier cru in Leflaive's extensive Puligny portfolio
- Alain Chavy is the other notable producer with holdings in the vineyard

Le Clavoillon produces dry white wine from Chardonnay with a style that balances freshness and depth. Typical descriptors include citrus, white peach, and stone fruit, underpinned by the mineral tension that defines the finest Puligny premiers crus. The high natural acidity gives these wines excellent aging potential, and while they show well young with a few years of bottle age, the best examples from Leflaive can develop over a decade or more. The wines are generally more approachable and less austere in youth than some of the higher-slope Puligny premiers crus, a reflection of the clay-rich lower-escarpment soils.
Dry, mineral-driven Chardonnay with citrus, white peach, and stone fruit; high acidity and a taut, focused mid-palate with a long, stony finish.
