History and Origins
Château Pouget traces its origins to 1748, when François Antoine Pouget inherited the vineyards that would bear his family's name. In 1771, Pouget's daughter married Pierre Antoine de Chavailles, and the estate remained in the de Chavailles family for over 150 years. During the French Revolution, a portion of the property was annexed to the neighboring Château Kirwan. The Guillemet family acquired the estate in 1906, and Lucien Guillemet, the fifth generation of the family, has served as Technical Director since 1996. The Guillemets also own the adjacent Third Growth Château Boyd-Cantenac, with both estates sharing winemaking facilities.
- Founded in 1748 by François Antoine Pouget
- Connected to Château Kirwan through a Revolutionary-era land annexation
- Guillemet family has owned and operated the estate since 1906
- Same ownership as Château Boyd-Cantenac (3ème Grand Cru Classé)
Terroir and Viticulture
Château Pouget's 10 hectares sit on a south-facing slope in Cantenac, a commune at the southern end of the Margaux appellation. The soils are classified as graves sableuses, sandy gravel with gravelly outcrops that provide excellent drainage and heat retention, classic conditions for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon in this temperate maritime climate. The estate achieved organic certification in 2017, placing it among a growing number of classified Bordeaux properties committed to sustainable viticulture. At just 10 hectares, Pouget ranks as one of the smallest estates among the 1855 Classified Growths.

Winemaking and Style
The grape blend at Château Pouget is led by Cabernet Sauvignon at 60%, supported by 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. This composition is typical for a Margaux estate and produces wines that favor elegance and finesse over weight and extraction. Winemaking takes place in a converted house and cellar, as the estate has no traditional château building. This is a notable distinction: Château Pouget is one of only a handful of 1855 Classified Growths that lacks a formal château structure, giving it a working-estate character that stands apart from the grander properties of the Médoc.
- 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
- No traditional château building; winemaking in a converted house and cellar
- Shared production facilities with Château Boyd-Cantenac
- Style emphasizes elegance, refinement, and complexity over power

Château Pouget was classified as a 4ème Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, a ranking it retains to this day. The 1855 Classification has not been revised for the Médoc since its inception (with the sole exception of Mouton Rothschild's elevation to First Growth in 1973), meaning Pouget's status reflects both historical reputation and ongoing quality. The estate's small size, organic credentials, and family ownership across five generations give it a character that is distinct within the Margaux appellation.
Château Pouget produces medium-bodied reds with a refined, elegant profile. Expect red and dark fruit, cedar, and earthy notes on the nose, with a palate that shows fine-grained tannins, good acidity, and a persistent, complex finish typical of Margaux's sandy gravel terroir.
