sha-TOE la-FON ro-SHAY

Château Lafon-Rochet is a Fourth Growth Saint-Estèphe estate bordering both Cos d'Estournel and Lafite-Rothschild. Founded in 1650, the estate fell into serious decline before the Tesseron family rebuilt it from the ground up starting in 1960, making it the only 1855 Classified Growth to be entirely reconstructed in the 20th century. New owners, the Lorenzetti family, took over in 2021.

📜History and Origins

The estate traces its origins to 1650, when Antoinette de Guillemotte brought the Domaine Rochet as her dowry upon marrying Pierre de Lafon, giving the property its hyphenated name. The Lafon family held it for over 200 years, weathering the upheaval of the French Revolution. Like many Bordeaux estates, Lafon-Rochet suffered grievously through the phylloxera crisis and the devastation of two World Wars, leaving it in serious decline by the mid-20th century.

  • Founded 1650 through the marriage of Antoinette de Guillemotte and Pierre de Lafon
  • Remained in Lafon family ownership for more than 200 years
  • Declined severely due to phylloxera and the economic toll of two World Wars
  • Sold to Guy Tesseron in 1960, beginning a transformative period of rebuilding

🔨The Tesseron Transformation

Guy Tesseron purchased the estate in 1960 and undertook a complete reconstruction of both the château and the winery, a project so thorough that Lafon-Rochet stands as the only 1855 Classified Growth to have been entirely rebuilt in the 20th century. Michel Tesseron took over stewardship in 1999 and made one of the estate's most visible statements in 2000, painting the château a bold yellow that became a recognizable landmark in the Médoc. His son Basile joined the operation in 2007. The Tesseron family's decades of investment transformed a marginal property into a respected and consistent Saint-Estèphe producer before selling to Jacky Lorenzetti in September 2021.

  • Guy Tesseron (1960-1999) rebuilt the entire château and winery from the ground up
  • Michel Tesseron (1999-2021) oversaw the estate's rise in quality and reputation
  • The yellow façade, applied in 2000, became an iconic visual marker for the estate
  • Jacky Lorenzetti and the Lorenzetti family acquired the estate in September 2021

🌍Terroir and Vineyard

Lafon-Rochet sits in the southern portion of the Saint-Estèphe appellation at an elevation of 26 meters, positioned between two of Bordeaux's most celebrated estates: Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Lafite-Rothschild. The 41 hectares under vine feature a notably diverse soil profile, with deep gravel over a clay base, limestone, sand, and marl. Of particular interest is the presence of blue clay, a rare soil type more commonly associated with Petrus in Pomerol. The maritime climate of the Médoc, tempered by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, contributes to the measured ripening that defines the wines.

  • Soils include deep gravel, clay, blue clay (rare, also found at Petrus), limestone, sand, and marl
  • Southern Saint-Estèphe location between Cos d'Estournel and Lafite-Rothschild
  • Elevation of 26 meters with maritime influence from both the Atlantic and the Gironde estuary

🍇Grape Varieties and Winemaking

The estate's blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically accounts for 48 to 57 percent of plantings, with Merlot providing significant support at 36 to 45 percent. Petit Verdot (3-4%) and Cabernet Franc (2-3.5%) round out the blend, adding further layers of complexity. This composition reflects a classically structured Médoc approach while the generous Merlot proportion introduces the warmth and roundness that tempers Saint-Estèphe's natural austerity. The result is a wine that balances the appellation's characteristic grip with accessibility and elegance.

🍷Wine Style

Lafon-Rochet produces elegant, refined red wines with a medium to full body and well-structured tannins. Black fruit aromas are the hallmark of the nose, with the Cabernet Sauvignon delivering complexity and aging potential while the Merlot contributes roundness and a sense of warmth on the palate. The wines sit comfortably within the Saint-Estèphe profile, offering structure and depth without sacrificing balance, and they reward cellaring while remaining approachable relative to some of the appellation's more austere expressions.

Flavor Profile

Medium to full-bodied with structured tannins and black fruit aromas including blackcurrant and plum. The Merlot component brings warmth, roundness, and fleshy mid-palate weight, while Cabernet Sauvignon drives complexity, firm structure, and long aging potential. Earthy mineral notes reflect the estate's clay and gravel soils.
