🏰History and Ownership

The estate takes its name from the Libéral family, who founded it in the 18th century and established its reputation before the landmark 1855 Classification awarded it Fifth Growth status. The Cruse family, one of Bordeaux's notable négociant dynasties, held ownership from 1960 until 1982. Jacques Merlaut of the Taillan Group then acquired the property, beginning a new chapter of focused investment. His granddaughter Claire Villars-Lurton took over management in 1992, alongside her husband Gonzague Lurton, and has driven the estate's transformation into one of Pauillac's most compelling overachievers.

🌱Terroir and Vineyard

Haut-Bages-Libéral's 30 hectares occupy a distinctive position on the higher elevations of the Bages plateau, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The estate benefits from the moderating maritime influence that defines the Médoc climate, with the estuary providing critical thermal buffering. What truly sets the vineyard apart is its soil composition: deep gravel over limestone, with clay-limestone and chalky substrates beneath. This makes it one of only two estates in Pauillac with meaningful limestone in the profile, a characteristic that contributes directly to the wine's signature mineral freshness. The proximity to Château Latour is not merely geographic; both estates share elements of this uncommon terroir.

🍇Viticulture and Winemaking

Under Claire Villars-Lurton's direction, the estate has pursued an ambitious shift toward sustainable and regenerative farming. Organic certification was achieved in 2019, followed by full biodynamic certification in 2021, placing Haut-Bages-Libéral among a small group of classified growths committed to this level of farming rigor. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for 70-75% of the blend, with Merlot making up the balance. This classic Pauillac composition, grown on limestone-enriched soils and farmed biodynamically, produces wines with both the structural weight expected from the appellation and an expressive mineral character less common at this price level.

  • Certified organic since 2019, biodynamic since 2021
  • Cabernet Sauvignon dominates at 70-75%; Merlot comprises 25-30%
  • Managed by Claire Villars-Lurton and Gonzague Lurton
