📜History and Classification

The estate takes its name from the Comte d'Arche, who acquired the property in 1733. Like many Bordeaux châteaux, it was seized during the French Revolution before eventually returning to private hands. Château d'Arche was formally recognized in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, receiving 2nd Cru Classé status among the Sauternes estates. In 1981, the property was leased to Pierre Perromat, who at the time served as president of the INAO (Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité). The château changed ownership in 1996, and continued investment in the estate culminated in the inauguration of a new eco-responsible winery in 2019.

🌿Terroir and Vineyard

Château d'Arche sits on a hill above the village of Sauternes within the Graves sub-region of Bordeaux. The 40-hectare vineyard benefits from the climatic conditions that make Sauternes unique: a Mediterranean-influenced climate shaped by autumn fog generated at the confluence of the Ciron and Garonne rivers. This humid morning fog, followed by warm afternoon sunshine, creates the ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential for producing great Sauternes. The elevated position of the vineyard contributes to good drainage and sun exposure.

🍇Grape Varieties and Wine Style

The vineyard is planted with 90% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon Blanc, and 1% Muscadelle, a blend typical of the Sauternes appellation. Sémillon dominates because its thin skin makes it especially susceptible to Botrytis cinerea, concentrating sugars and developing the complex flavors associated with great Sauternes. Sauvignon Blanc contributes aromatic lift and freshness, while the small proportion of Muscadelle adds a subtle floral note. The resulting wine is a rich, sweet white dessert wine showing the classic Sauternes profile of apricot, honey, and botrytized complexity.
