History and Ownership
Château Cantenac Brown was founded in 1806 by John Lewis Brown, a Scottish animal painter who gave the estate its distinctive identity. Brown commissioned a Tudor-style château remarkable for its 370 windows and doors, a design unlike anything else in the Médoc. The property was classified as a Third Growth in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Classification, cementing its status among the Médoc elite. Ownership passed through several hands in the modern era, including AXA Millésimes from 1989 to 2006 and the Halabi family from 2006 to 2019. In December 2019, Tristan Le Lous, an agronomist and oenologist connected to the Urgo pharmaceutical group, acquired the estate and launched an ambitious program of renewal.

Terroir and Vineyard
The estate sits in Cantenac, one of the key communes within the Margaux appellation, with vineyards reaching a peak elevation of 18 meters on a south-facing aspect. The 59 hectares under vine are defined by varied soil types that span three distinct profiles: 34 hectares of deep Günzian gravel on the plateau, 16 hectares of smaller gravel, and 6 hectares of clay-limestone. The dominant Günzian gravel, among the oldest and deepest gravelly deposits in the Médoc, provides excellent drainage and heat retention, driving the ripeness and structure that characterize the grand cru style. The temperate maritime climate of the Médoc, moderated by proximity to the Gironde estuary, underpins consistent vine health across the estate.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the vineyard at 65%, supported by 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, with Petit Verdot recently introduced to add complexity. This blend is classic Left Bank Médoc in structure, producing wines that combine the blackcurrant and violet aromatics associated with Margaux with silky tannins and refined balance. The style of Château Cantenac Brown leans toward elegance over power, making it a textbook example of the Margaux appellation character. Aging potential is substantial, with the grand vin typically developing over 18 to 30 years.

Elegant and refined with blackcurrant, violet, and dark berry aromatics. Silky, well-integrated tannins support a balanced frame with good acidity. The palate shows depth without heaviness, with the gravelly terroir contributing mineral precision and length. Built for the long term, with complexity emerging over 18 to 30 years of cellaring.
