History and Origins
Castello di Gabbiano's first cellars were built in 1124, when the property belonged to the Bardi family, prominent Florentine bankers who later expanded the structure with 13th-century Guelph battlements. The square tower was built as a defensive measure for the medieval trade route between Florence and Siena. The Soderini family, another influential Florentine line, gave the castle its present form in 1505. Through subsequent centuries the estate passed through multiple owners, with the current owners (Treasury Wine Estates) completing a major renovation around the turn of the millennium and continuing to operate the property as a working wine estate and visitor destination.

Vineyards and Terroir
The estate is located in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, the northernmost UGA of the Chianti Classico DOCG. More than 150 hectares of vineyard span elevations between 250 and 350 meters above sea level on hillside parcels. Soils are dominated by clay and limestone, with notable stony character throughout, producing wines of structured tannin and good acidity preservation. Vines are trained primarily on the Guyot system. The size of the holding makes Castello di Gabbiano one of the largest Chianti Classico estates in the province of Florence, providing significant production volume alongside a tiered quality range from value to flagship bottlings.

Grapes and Winemaking
Sangiovese anchors the estate's portfolio, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also planted for Bordeaux blends and Riserva contributions. The Bellezza Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is the estate's flagship single-vineyard wine, sourced from a particularly favorable hillside parcel and aged for extended periods in a combination of larger Slavonian botti and smaller French oak. Annata Chianti Classico draws on the wider estate vineyards; Riserva offers a longer-aged version. The estate also produces an Alleanza Toscana IGT (Sangiovese-Cabernet Sauvignon blend) and a Cavaliere d'Oro Toscana IGT Sangiovese-based wine. The winemaking team balances traditional Sangiovese practices with selective modern techniques for international varietals.

The 150+ hectares of vineyard make it one of the most distributed Chianti Classico producers internationally, providing reliable access to the appellation's classical Sangiovese style at multiple price points. The Bellezza Gran Selezione demonstrates that scale does not preclude high-end quality, with extended aging and single-vineyard selection elevating the wine into the upper echelon of Chianti Classico's top tier.
