Vineyard and Terroir
Bryant Family Vineyard sits on the western slope of Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,200 feet. The 13-acre site overlooks Lake Hennessey, which channels cool breezes across the vineyard and provides natural protection from the hot canyon winds that affect lower sites. Soils are volcanic clay loam combined with rocky Sobrante material, delivering excellent drainage and low natural vigor that forces the vines to produce small, concentrated crops.
- Elevation: 900-1,200 feet on Pritchard Hill's western slope
- Soils: volcanic clay loam and rocky Sobrante, providing excellent drainage
- Lake Hennessey moderates temperatures with cool breezes throughout the growing season
- Low natural vine vigor contributes to the estate's dramatically reduced yields
History and Origins
Don Bryant purchased the Pritchard Hill property in 1985 with the intention of building a private home. Recognizing the vineyard's exceptional potential, he pivoted toward wine production and released the first Bryant Family vintage in 1992 with Helen Turley as winemaker. The wines quickly became benchmarks of California quality. Vintages from 1993 through 1997 earned scores between 97 and 100 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, cementing Bryant Family's place alongside Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate as one of California's original cult wines. Biodynamic farming was adopted as of 2018.
