Brutocao Cellars
Fourth-generation Hopland family winery with Mendocino farming roots dating to 1943 (Bliss family) and first commercial vintage in 1980, focused on Italian-tradition varieties (Sangiovese, Barbera, Dolcetto, Primitivo) alongside Bordeaux and California heritage grapes.
Brutocao Cellars is a family-owned Mendocino winery rooted in two intertwined families. Irv Bliss began farming the Hopland property now known as the Bliss Ranch in 1943, raising grapes, figs, sheep, and cattle before converting the ranch fully to vineyards in the 1970s. After Leonard Brutocao married Martha Bliss, the families combined their land and sold fruit to Sonoma and Napa wineries for years before producing their first wine in 1980. A dedicated winery was built on the Bliss Ranch in 1990, and the historic Hopland High School building was restored as the public tasting room in 1998. The estate cultivates roughly 400 to 450 acres of planted vineyard across three Hopland ranches (Bliss, Feliz, Contento) plus a small Pinot Noir block in Anderson Valley, with deliberate emphasis on Italian-tradition varieties alongside Bordeaux and California grapes.
- Bliss family began farming in Mendocino in 1943 when Irv Bliss purchased what is now the Home Ranch (Bliss Vineyard); Brutocao and Bliss families combined operations after Leonard Brutocao married Martha Bliss
- First Brutocao wine was produced in 1980; dedicated estate winery built on the Bliss Ranch in 1990 to make all wines estate produced; expanded in 2003 and 2009
- Hopland tasting room occupies the restored Hopland High School building (built 1922, served as the public high school 1922 to 1963); restoration completed by Leonard Brutocao in 1998
- Planted vineyard area totals roughly 400 to 450 acres across three Hopland ranches: Bliss (177 acres planted of 400), Feliz (114 acres planted of 583, acquired 1994), and Contento (90 acres planted of 251, acquired 1997, planted from 1999)
- Anderson Valley holding is approximately 12.5 acres planted to Pinot Noir; the cool-climate site supplies a single varietal program rather than a broad Anderson Valley range
- Italian-tradition variety focus distinguishes Brutocao within Mendocino: estate Sangiovese, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Primitivo plus Bordeaux varieties, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah
- Brutocao is a founding member of Coro Mendocino, the Mendocino-led blending consortium requiring 40 to 70 percent Zinfandel and 100 percent Mendocino County fruit; annual estate production is in the 15,000 case range
Bliss Roots, Brutocao Wines, and the 1990 Estate Winery
The story begins with the Bliss family. Irv Bliss bought the Hopland ranch now known as the Bliss Vineyard or Home Ranch in 1943 and farmed grapes, figs, sheep, and cattle through the early decades, gradually converting the property to grapes through the 1970s. The Brutocao family had emigrated from Treviso in 1910, bringing northern Italian winegrowing instincts. Leonard Brutocao met Martha Bliss at the University of California, Berkeley, and after they married the two families combined their land. For many years the joint operation sold fruit to established Sonoma and Napa wineries before producing their first Brutocao label wine in 1980. The first decade was wines made at custom crush facilities. In 1990 the family built a dedicated winery on the Bliss Ranch so that all wines could be vinified estate produced; the facility was expanded in 2003 and again in 2009. In 1998 Leonard Brutocao restored the historic Hopland High School building (originally constructed in 1922, the town high school from 1922 to 1963) to serve as the public tasting room and event facility. The operation is now a fourth-generation enterprise.

Three Hopland Ranches and One Anderson Valley Block
Planted vineyard area totals roughly 400 to 450 acres across three Hopland ranches plus a single Anderson Valley parcel. Bliss Vineyard (also called the Home Ranch) is 400 acres in total with 177 acres planted to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, and Dolcetto. Feliz Vineyard, purchased in 1994, is 583 acres in total with 114 acres planted to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, Barbera, Zinfandel, and Pinot Noir. Contento Vineyard, purchased in 1997 and planted starting in 1999, is 251 acres in total with 90 acres now under vine to Cabernet Sauvignon and Primitivo. The Anderson Valley holding is comparatively small at roughly 12.5 acres planted exclusively to Pinot Noir, providing the cool-climate fruit for a single varietal program rather than a broad Anderson Valley range. Warm Hopland summers favor Italian and Bordeaux red varieties; cool Anderson Valley fog and elevation favor Pinot Noir.
- Bliss Vineyard (Home Ranch): 400 acres total, 177 acres planted; broad mix including Italian and Bordeaux varieties
- Feliz Vineyard (acquired 1994): 583 acres total, 114 acres planted; wide varietal range including Pinot Noir
- Contento Vineyard (acquired 1997, planted from 1999): 251 acres total, 90 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Primitivo
- Anderson Valley holding: approximately 12.5 acres planted to Pinot Noir only; single cool-climate varietal program
- Total planted vineyard area roughly 400 to 450 acres concentrated in Hopland with one Anderson Valley parcel
Italian-Tradition Identity and Broader Varietal Range
Italian-tradition varieties anchor the Brutocao identity. Estate Sangiovese, often labeled as Bliss Vineyard or simply estate, expresses plum, strawberry, and blueberry notes with a spicy mid-palate and earthy finish. Barbera supplies the high-acid Italian red signature; Dolcetto offers soft tannins and bright fruit; Primitivo from the Contento Vineyard provides the briary dark fruit and tannic concentration shared with its genetic counterpart Zinfandel. Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and California heritage grapes (Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah) round out the program. Brutocao is a founding member of Coro Mendocino, the consortium-style blend requiring 40 to 70 percent Zinfandel, 100 percent Mendocino County fruit, and adherence to bylaws governing alcohol, oak, and aging. The Brutocao Coro typically leads with Zinfandel and incorporates the estate Italian grapes for a Mendocino expression of Mediterranean field-blend logic. Annual production is in the 15,000 case range, smaller than the operation's visitor footprint suggests but supporting both tasting room and wholesale distribution channels.
- Italian-tradition foundation: Sangiovese, Barbera, Dolcetto, Primitivo; provides distinctive identity within Mendocino
- Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and California heritage grapes (Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah) round out program
- Founding member of Coro Mendocino: 100 percent Mendocino fruit, 40 to 70 percent Zinfandel, bylaw-governed blend program
- Annual production approximately 15,000 cases; combined tasting room and wholesale distribution channels

The Hopland tasting room and event facility occupies the 1922 Hopland High School building, restored by Leonard Brutocao in 1998 and surrounded by gardens, bocce courts, and event lawns. The result is one of Mendocino County's most polished visitor experiences, with hospitality scaled toward weddings, corporate functions, and walk-in tastings as well as wine club members. A second tasting room operates separately in Philo for the Anderson Valley fruit. The combination of estate visitor business, wholesale distribution, and direct-to-consumer wine club gives Brutocao broader brand recognition than its modest case count would suggest. The Bliss Vineyard designation appears on several single-vineyard bottlings, including Sangiovese, Barbera, and Cabernet Sauvignon, honoring the 1943 origin of the family farming on this site.
- Hopland tasting room: restored 1922 high school building with gardens, bocce courts, and event facilities
- Second Anderson Valley tasting room in Philo for cool-climate Pinot Noir program
- Combined tasting room, wholesale, and wine club distribution; broader recognition than 15,000 case production suggests
- Bliss Vineyard designation on Sangiovese, Barbera, and Cabernet Sauvignon honors 1943 farming origin
