📜History

York Mountain's wine history stretches back to the 1870s, when British immigrant Andrew York planted the first vineyards in the area. His Ascension Winery, established in 1882, became the first bonded winery on the entire Central Coast. The property remained in the York family for generations before Max Goldman purchased it in 1970, renaming it York Mountain Winery. Goldman and his son Stephen later petitioned for AVA status, which was officially designated on August 24, 1983 and amended in 1987. Epoch Estate Wines acquired the original York Mountain Winery and property in 2010, continuing its legacy.

🌊Climate and Geography

York Mountain sits on the eastern side of the Santa Lucia Mountains, just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean. This proximity gives it a dramatically cooler, wetter character than most of the surrounding Central Coast. The AVA is positioned at the opening of the Templeton Gap, a natural channel that draws cool marine air and fog inland throughout the growing season. Annual rainfall ranges from 45 to 50 inches, and diurnal temperature shifts of 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit help grapes retain acidity while developing full flavor. These conditions place York Mountain firmly in Region I, the coolest classification on the UC Davis heat summation scale.

  • Seven miles from the Pacific Ocean with strong maritime influence
  • Templeton Gap funnels cool marine air and fog directly into the AVA
  • 45-50 inches of annual rainfall versus 15-20 inches in Paso Robles
  • Diurnal temperature shifts of 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit preserve natural acidity

🪨Soils and Elevation

Vineyards sit between 1,512 and 1,678 feet (461-511 meters), with most cultivation occurring around 1,500 feet. The soils are dominated by sandstone with sandy clay, complemented by limestone outcrops, chalky limestone, and alluvial deep sandy clay-loam. This combination of well-drained, mineral-rich substrates, combined with dry-farming practices, produces low yields and concentrated fruit. The chalky limestone component in particular lends a distinct minerality to the wines, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

  • Elevations range from 1,512 to 1,678 feet above sea level
  • Primary soils: sandstone with sandy clay and limestone outcrops
  • Chalky limestone and alluvial deep sandy clay-loam also present
  • Dry-farmed vineyards with limited irrigation produce low yields

🍇Grapes and Wine Style

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the signature grapes of York Mountain, well suited to its cool, maritime climate. Reds show elegant structure with silky tannins and mineral character, while whites display fresh acidity with citrus and stone fruit. The AVA also supports Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Zinfandel, and Tempranillo. The combination of cool temperatures, high elevation, and low-yielding dry-farmed vines results in concentrated wines that stand apart from the bolder, riper styles typical of Paso Robles just to the east. Currently, three wineries operate within the AVA, and several Paso Robles producers source York Mountain fruit for AVA-designated bottlings.

  • Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the benchmark varieties
  • Cool climate produces silky tannins, mineral-driven reds, and fresh acidic whites
  • Ten grape varieties cultivated including Zinfandel, Syrah, and Tempranillo
  • Three wineries operate within the AVA; additional Paso Robles producers source fruit here
Flavor Profile

Cool-climate elegance defines York Mountain wines. Pinot Noir shows silky tannins, red fruit, and pronounced minerality. Chardonnay delivers fresh acidity with citrus and stone fruit. Other reds, including Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, retain structure and restraint rather than the ripe, extracted character typical of warmer Central Coast appellations.
