Location and Landscape
Touraine-Oisly occupies a plateau between the Loire and Cher rivers in the heart of Sologne, one of France's most distinctive natural regions. The appellation covers 10 communes: Oisly, Chémery, Choussy, Le-Controis-en-Sologne, Couddes, Méhers, Sassay, Soings-en-Sologne, Saint-Romain-sur-Cher, and Thenay. The elevated plateau position gives the area a sunnier, drier microclimate compared to much of the Loire Valley, a key advantage for ripening Sauvignon Blanc fully and consistently.
- Plateau setting between the Loire and Cher rivers reduces rainfall and increases sun exposure
- Semi-continental climate with oceanic influences shapes the growing season
- 10 communes fall within the appellation boundaries in Sologne
- Approximately 12 artisan winemakers farm the 80 hectares under vine
Soils and Terroir
The soils of Touraine-Oisly reflect the Miocene epoch and vary meaningfully across the plateau. The western areas feature clay with limestone and flint silt, the central zones are sand-dominant, and the eastern portions shift to limestone with iron-rich sand. Throughout the appellation, the common thread is sandy-gravel soils on a clay base, which drain well, warm quickly, and were identified early on as ideal for Sauvignon Blanc. These soil variations contribute to the aromatic complexity the appellation is known for.
- Sandy-gravel soils on clay base dominate, with Miocene-epoch origins
- Western areas: clay with limestone and flint silt
- Central areas: sand-dominant profiles
- Eastern areas: limestone with iron-rich sand
History and Recognition
The story of Sauvignon Blanc in Oisly stretches back to 1905, when a vine trellis was discovered on a local winegrower's lodge. Fabel Barbou is credited with reintroducing Sauvignon Blanc to the region at the start of the 20th century. Serious collective effort began in the late 1970s, when local winemakers selectively planted Sauvignon Blanc on the plateau's sandy soils. Decades of work paid off in 2011, when Touraine-Oisly was officially recognized as an AOC geographic denomination within Touraine AOC, joining four other Touraine sub-appellations.
