The Lane Vineyard
How to say it
Hahndorf Valley estate in the Adelaide Hills producing precise, cool-climate Block series single-vineyard wines from 350-metre hillsides above the historic German settlement.
The Lane Vineyard was founded in 1993 by Helen and John Edwards on Hahndorf Hill at the southern edge of the Adelaide Hills wine region. The estate sits at approximately 350 metres elevation in the Hahndorf Valley sub-area, where cool-climate conditions favour aromatic whites and lighter-framed reds. Vok Beverages acquired the estate in 2010, and the brand was subsequently rebuilt under industry leader David Lloyd into a contemporary cellar door, restaurant, and wine destination. The wine program centres on the Block series of single-vineyard cuvees, the 19th Meeting cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon, the Reginald Germein single-block Shiraz, the Heritage Chardonnay, and the Pretty Mug Pinot Gris.

Founding and Ownership History
Helen and John Edwards established The Lane Vineyard in 1993 on Hahndorf Hill, a 350-metre elevation site overlooking the historic German village of Hahndorf at the southern end of the Adelaide Hills wine region. The Edwards family planted estate vineyards across Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris, building one of the early modern Adelaide Hills cellar doors at a time when the region was still defining its identity beyond fruit grower for the Barossa and McLaren Vale. In 2010, the Edwards family sold the estate to Vok Beverages, a multi-category Australian drinks business with brands across beer, cider, and wine. John Edwards subsequently departed the business. Industry leader David Lloyd and the Vok Beverages team led a comprehensive rebuild of the brand through the 2010s, expanding the cellar door experience, developing the restaurant, and refining the wine program under the Block series single-vineyard structure that has come to define the modern Lane Vineyard identity.
- 1993: Helen and John Edwards found The Lane Vineyard on Hahndorf Hill at 350 m elevation; estate plantings across Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris
- Among the early modern Adelaide Hills cellar doors, established as the region was defining a distinct identity from Barossa and McLaren Vale
- 2010: Vok Beverages acquires the estate; John Edwards subsequently departs the business
- Brand rebuilt under David Lloyd and Vok team: expanded cellar door, restaurant program, Block series single-vineyard wine structure
Hahndorf Valley Terroir
The Lane estate occupies a ridge above Hahndorf at the southern end of the Mount Lofty Ranges, in what is informally known as the Hahndorf Valley sub-area of the broader Adelaide Hills wine region. The site sits at approximately 350 metres elevation, considerably cooler than the Barossa Valley floor 30 kilometres to the north. The continental climate produces warm summer days moderated by cool to cold nights, with diurnal variation typically 12 to 18 degrees Celsius during the ripening period. The soils are mixed: weathered grey-brown loams over fractured rock substrate, with pockets of sandy loam and ironstone gravel that influence drainage and root depth across the estate. Rainfall averages 750 to 850 mm annually, concentrated in winter and spring, with a relatively dry growing season. The combination of altitude, cool nights, and free-draining soils suits the aromatic and acid-driven varieties that define the modern Adelaide Hills, namely Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris, alongside cool-climate expressions of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Block Series and Flagship Wines
The Block series structures The Lane Vineyard's premium wine program around individual estate parcels. Each Block bottling is sourced from a single numbered vineyard block, allowing the team to express the variations in aspect, soil, and clone across the estate. Block 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and others rotate across vintages and varieties depending on the character expressed in each season. The 19th Meeting Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the estate's signature wines, named after the historic meeting of South Australian winemakers that helped shape the modern Australian wine industry. Built from cool-climate Adelaide Hills Cabernet at 350 metres, the wine departs from the warmer Coonawarra and Margaret River Cabernet style, instead expressing a leafier, more aromatic, structurally elegant version of the variety. The Reginald Germein Shiraz draws from a single block of estate Shiraz, producing cool-climate Adelaide Hills Shiraz with white pepper lift, lighter alcohol, and more aromatic complexity than the warm-climate Barossa style. The Heritage Chardonnay and the Pretty Mug Pinot Gris round out the flagship range, supported by an aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and traditional method sparkling wines.

The Lane farms the Hahndorf Hill estate with a focus on canopy management, fruit zone exposure, and yield discipline appropriate to cool-climate aromatic and structural wines. Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certification frames the broader vineyard programme. Most blocks are hand-picked in tight windows aligned with target acidity and phenolic ripeness; the team aims for moderate ripeness levels that preserve aromatic precision and acid line rather than late-picked richness. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, cold-settled, and barrel-fermented in French oak hogsheads with extended lees ageing for textural depth; new oak is moderate to allow fruit and site expression. Pinot Noir is destemmed (with some whole-bunch inclusion in cooler vintages) and fermented in small open vessels with native yeast on the premium blocks. The Shiraz and Cabernet wines are fermented in open vessels with traditional plunging and pump-overs, then aged in French oak hogsheads with controlled new oak. Across the range, the winemaking philosophy emphasises restraint: alcohol typically 12.5 to 14 percent, vibrant natural acidity, oak in support of fruit rather than dominating.

The cellar door overlooks the Hahndorf Hill estate vineyards at 350 metres elevation, with extensive views across the Mount Lofty Ranges. The restaurant is integrated into the cellar door complex and is a designated dining destination in its own right, offering seasonal tasting menus paired with the Block series wines and the broader portfolio. The contemporary glass-and-stone architecture, combined with the elevated hillside location, has made The Lane one of the most photographed wine destinations in South Australia. The Lane Vineyard wines express cool-climate Adelaide Hills fruit with disciplined winemaking restraint. Chardonnay shows white peach, stone fruit, cool-climate citrus, struck flint, and creme-fraiche texture from extended lees ageing in moderate French oak; alcohol typically 12.5 to 13.5 percent. Pinot Noir leads with red cherry, raspberry, dried rose, sappy stem character, and savoury earth; medium-bodied with fine tannins and vibrant acidity. The Reginald Germein Shiraz expresses cool-climate Shiraz signatures of white pepper, dark plum, red cherry, dried herb, and floral lift at moderate alcohol (typically 13.5 to 14 percent), markedly different from the riper Barossa style. The 19th Meeting Cabernet Sauvignon shows blackcurrant, red plum, dried herb, graphite, and the leafier cool-climate Cabernet aromatics, structured by fine tannins and bright acidity rather than the broader warm-climate ripeness of Coonawarra or Margaret River. Pretty Mug Pinot Gris shows white pear, honeysuckle, and textural lees character. Across the range, vibrant acidity, restrained alcohol, and judicious oak define the house style.
