Tablas Creek Vineyard

TAB-las KREEK

Tablas Creek Vineyard was founded in 1989 as a partnership between the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and California wine importer Robert Haas, who had imported Beaucastel to the United States since the mid-1960s. The partners purchased an initial 120-acre property in the Adelaida District west of Paso Robles in 1989 on calcareous limestone soils chosen for their similarity to Beaucastel; subsequent additions expanded the estate to approximately 270 acres today. Tablas Creek imported, propagated, and distributed Rhône varietal clones from Beaucastel including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Roussanne, Marsanne, and others that became the foundation of California's modern Rhône-style movement. The estate is Demeter-certified Biodynamic (2017) and Regenerative Organic Certified. The Esprit de Tablas red and Esprit de Tablas blanc are the flagship cuvées.

📜Origins and Founding

Robert Haas was a New York wine importer who had imported Château de Beaucastel's Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the United States since the mid-1960s through his company Vineyard Brands. He worked closely with Beaucastel's Jacques Perrin and later with Jacques' sons Jean-Pierre and Francois Perrin. In 1985 Haas and the Perrins began searching California for a site that could replicate Beaucastel's combination of calcareous limestone soils, hot summers, and the cooling influence of a maritime climate, evaluating properties from the Sierra foothills south to Ventura County. In 1989 they purchased a 120-acre property in what is now the Adelaida District west of Paso Robles, where calcareous shale and limestone soils at approximately 1,500 feet elevation matched the criteria. They named it Tablas Creek after the small creek running through the property. The partners then built greenhouse facilities in 1992 to propagate Beaucastel cuttings that had cleared USDA quarantine, planting the first vines in 1994. The inaugural commercial vintage was 1997. The estate has since expanded through subsequent property additions to approximately 270 acres today.

  • Search began 1985; partners surveyed California from Sierra foothills to Ventura County before settling on the Adelaida District
  • 1989 purchase: 120-acre property in Adelaida District on calcareous limestone soils similar to Beaucastel; expanded to ~270 acres today
  • Greenhouse facilities built 1992; first vines planted 1994; first commercial vintage 1997

🎯Why It Matters

Tablas Creek Vineyard is the institutional anchor of California's Rhône Rangers Movement. The estate's Beaucastel-sourced clone library, comprising Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Roussanne, Marsanne, Picpoul, Viognier, and the rarer Rhône varieties Vaccarèse, Picardan, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and Cinsault, provided California growers with high-quality propagation material that had not previously been available. The Tablas Creek nursery program has supplied over one million cuttings to hundreds of California vineyards. The estate's own wines, particularly the Esprit de Tablas red (a Châteauneuf-du-Pape-style Mourvèdre-led blend) and Esprit de Tablas blanc (a Roussanne-led white blend), became benchmarks for California Rhône-style winemaking. Tablas Creek's commercial success and critical acclaim helped validate the Paso Robles AVA broadly and catalyzed subsequent prestige Rhône-style estates including Saxum, Booker, and L'Aventure. The estate's Demeter Biodynamic certification (2017) and Regenerative Organic Certified status (2020) extended its institutional influence to viticultural practice.

🍇Vineyards and Winemaking

Tablas Creek's approximately 270-acre estate in the Adelaida District west of Paso Robles is the sole fruit source for the estate wines. Approximately 115 to 140 acres are planted to vines, with the balance preserved as native chaparral, oak savanna, and biodiversity habitat. Elevations average around 1,500 feet; soils are predominantly calcareous shale and limestone derived from the Monterey Formation. The vineyard is planted to a comprehensive Rhône varietal library: Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, Counoise, Tannat, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin (reds); Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, Marsanne, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Viognier (whites). Farming has been organic since 1989, biodynamic in practice since 2010, Demeter-certified in 2017, and Regenerative Organic Certified since 2020. A mixed grazing herd of sheep, alpacas, and donkeys (since 2012) manages weeds and cover crops. In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy is rooted in Beaucastel's Châteauneuf-du-Pape traditions: blending across many varieties, native yeast fermentation, large-format neutral oak (1,200-gallon French oak foudres rather than 225-liter barrels), and minimal intervention. The flagship Esprit de Tablas red is typically Mourvèdre-led (40 to 50 percent) with Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise; the Esprit de Tablas blanc is Roussanne-led (50 to 60 percent) with Grenache Blanc and Picpoul. The estate also produces varietal bottlings, the entry-level Patelin de Tablas range, the Côtes de Tablas range, and small-lot cuvées. Neil Collins led winemaking from 1998; as of 2026 Chelsea Franchi is Director of Winemaking and Craig Hamm is Winemaker.

  • Organic since 1989; biodynamic practice since 2010; Demeter certified 2017; Regenerative Organic Certified 2020; mixed sheep/alpaca/donkey grazing herd since 2012
