📜History and Heritage

The Selbach family's connection to wine in the Mosel region is documented back to 1600, making this one of the area's most historically rooted estates. An ancestor, Matthias Oster, worked as a cooper crafting oak barrels for wines shipped down the Mosel River. The estate became an independent business in 1964, when its vineyards were separated from the broader family wine business J & H Selbach. The vineyard sites themselves have an even longer history, with wine growing documented there since Roman times.

🌿Vineyards and Terroir

Selbach-Oster farms 24 hectares spread across four villages in the Middle Mosel: Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach, and Bernkastel. Vineyards sit at elevations between 110 and 230 meters above sea level, with 85% of vines planted on steep slopes oriented to the south-southwest. The soils are weathered Devonian slate, both blue and gray varieties, with notable iron ore content. This slate terrain, combined with the cool continental climate featuring very cold winters, hot short summers, and long cool dry autumns, shapes the estate's signature mineral character. Many vines grow on original ungrafted rootstocks, with some exceeding 100 years of age.

🍾Winemaking Approach

Selbach-Oster follows a low-intervention philosophy, combining organic and sustainable farming practices with minimal interference in the cellar. Fermentation relies on wild yeasts and takes place in a combination of traditional fuder (large oak casks) and stainless steel tanks. Three flagship single-parcel bottlings are harvested en-bloc rather than through selective picking passes: Rotlay from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Schmitt from the Zeltinger Schlossberg, and Anrecht from the Zeltinger Himmelreich. The estate is currently led by Johannes, Barbara, and Sebastian Selbach.

  • Wild yeast fermentation in fuder and stainless steel
  • Organic and sustainable farming with low-intervention principles
  • Three flagship parcels harvested en-bloc: Rotlay, Schmitt, and Anrecht
  • Classified in the highest categories of the 1868 Mosel vineyard classification
