Scharffenberger Cellars
(pronunciation: SHARF-en-ber-ger SELL-ars)
Anderson Valley sparkling wine specialist founded in 1981 by John Scharffenberger, now part of the Maison Louis Roederer portfolio under Maisons Marques & Domaines USA since 2004.
Scharffenberger Cellars, located in Philo, California, within the Anderson Valley AVA of Mendocino County, was founded in 1981 by John Scharffenberger and ranks among California's foundational méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine producers. The estate has moved through three corporate eras: Champagne Pommery partnered with John Scharffenberger in 1989 and financed the 1991 purchase of the Philo property and the construction of the winery; LVMH (Pommery's parent at the time) bought John Scharffenberger out in 1995 and rebranded the operation as Pacific Echo; and in 2004 the brand was acquired by Maison Louis Roederer and restored to the Scharffenberger Cellars name, joining sister property Roederer Estate under the U.S. marketing arm Maisons Marques & Domaines (MMD). The estate cultivates approximately 120 acres of estate vineyard planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a small block of Pinot Meunier, and focuses production on méthode traditionnelle Brut, Brut Rosé, and limited reserve cuvées.

Founding and the Scharffenberger Era (1981 to 1989)
Scharffenberger Cellars was founded in 1981 by John Scharffenberger as one of the earliest sparkling wine ventures deliberately built around Anderson Valley's cool maritime climate. Scharffenberger had identified the valley's daily Pacific fog penetration through the Navarro River corridor, its long growing season, and its lean alluvial and clay soils as a strong match for Champagne-tradition base wines, and his bottlings through the 1980s helped establish Anderson Valley as a serious California sparkling wine region. The estate built recognition for cool-climate méthode traditionnelle production alongside the slightly later arrival of Roederer Estate in 1982. By the late 1980s the brand's prestige had attracted the attention of Champagne Pommery, the historic Reims house founded in 1858 and famed for Madame Louise Pommery's pioneering dry Brut style.
- Founded 1981 by John Scharffenberger in Philo, Anderson Valley AVA, Mendocino County
- Among the earliest deliberate sparkling-wine ventures in Anderson Valley; helped establish the AVA's sparkling specialist identity
- Built recognition through the 1980s alongside the arrival of Roederer Estate (1982)
- Brand prestige attracted Champagne Pommery, the Reims house founded in 1858 by Madame Louise Pommery
Pommery Partnership and LVMH Years (1989 to 2004)
Champagne Pommery partnered with Scharffenberger Cellars in 1989, bringing French champagne house technical resources, stylistic guidance, and capital. That investment financed the 1991 purchase of the Philo estate property and the construction of the present-day winery on that site. In 1995, Pommery's parent company at the time, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, bought John Scharffenberger out of the business entirely. Under LVMH the operation was rebranded as Pacific Echo Cellars, a name it carried through the early 2000s. The Pacific Echo period kept the méthode traditionnelle focus and Anderson Valley sourcing intact but separated the marketing identity from John Scharffenberger personally, who by then had turned his attention to Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker (founded 1996 with Robert Steinberg).
- Pommery partnered with the brand in 1989; financed 1991 Philo property purchase and winery construction
- LVMH (Pommery's parent at the time) bought John Scharffenberger out in 1995
- Brand renamed Pacific Echo Cellars during the LVMH era of the early 2000s
- John Scharffenberger turned to chocolate, co-founding Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker in 1996 with physician Robert Steinberg
Maison Louis Roederer Era (2004 to Present)
In 2004, Maison Louis Roederer acquired the brand from LVMH and restored its original Scharffenberger Cellars name. The estate joined Roederer Estate, the Anderson Valley sparkling-wine property the Roederer family had founded in 1982, inside the Maisons Marques & Domaines (MMD) USA portfolio that handles U.S. marketing and distribution for the Roederer Collection. The Roederer ownership brought stylistic continuity between two of Anderson Valley's flagship sparkling-wine estates while maintaining Scharffenberger as the more accessible, value-oriented sibling. A refreshed label and tasting room program in recent years has reaffirmed the original Scharffenberger identity. Roederer family leadership and the technical exchange with Reims-based Champagne Louis Roederer continue to shape the program.
- Acquired by Maison Louis Roederer in 2004; original Scharffenberger Cellars name restored
- Joined sibling property Roederer Estate under Maisons Marques & Domaines (MMD) USA, the Roederer Collection's U.S. marketing arm
- Stylistic continuity with the Reims-based Champagne Louis Roederer house
- Positioned as the more accessible, value-oriented Anderson Valley sparkling sibling alongside Roederer Estate

Scharffenberger Cellars farms approximately 120 acres of estate vineyard inside a larger property of roughly 200 acres, with a meaningful portion of the broader holding placed in the Anderson Valley Land Trust for permanent conservation. Plantings split approximately 66 percent Pinot Noir, 32 percent Chardonnay, and 2 percent Pinot Meunier, with several clones of each variety to provide blending flexibility for méthode traditionnelle base wines. The vineyards sit on a mix of alluvial and clay loams on the valley floor and sandstone and shale on hillside parcels, with Pacific fog penetration through the Navarro River corridor producing the long, cool growing season and substantial diurnal swings that preserve acidity in sparkling base fruit. The estate carries Fish Friendly Farming certification, and fruit sourcing is supplemented by long-term contracts with Mendocino growers.

Wines and Méthode Traditionnelle Program
Scharffenberger Cellars produces a focused méthode traditionnelle portfolio anchored by Brut Excellence (the non-vintage flagship) and Brut Rosé Excellence, with reserve and library cuvées added in select years. Production follows the Champagne-tradition protocol throughout: secondary fermentation in bottle, riddling, extended lees aging, and disgorgement. The blend choices, dosage style, and dry, brioche-driven house character reflect the technical exchange with sister property Roederer Estate and, by extension, the Reims-based Maison Louis Roederer program. The relative pricing positions Scharffenberger as a value-forward entry point to Anderson Valley méthode traditionnelle sparkling, with the higher-prestige L'Ermitage tête de cuvée from Roederer Estate occupying the top of the Anderson Valley sparkling tier within the same ownership family.
