History and Founding
Jorge Moreira founded Quinta do Poeira in 2001 with support from Dirk Niepoort, a prominent Port wine producer. The property originally encompassed 15 hectares, including ruined buildings, and required significant work to bring into production. From the outset, Moreira focused on producing fresh, elegant unfortified dry wines rather than Port, a bold direction during a period when fortified wines and extracted, concentrated styles dominated the Douro.

Location and Terroir
The estate sits in Provesende in the Pinhão valley, on the right bank of the Pinhão river within the Douro DOC. The vineyards cover 9 hectares, complemented by 2 hectares of olive orchards and 3 hectares of woodland. The Alvarinho vineyard is planted at 400 metres elevation on heavy soils. Soils across the estate carry notably high copper content, prompting active remediation efforts as part of the estate's certified organic program. Summer temperatures are extremely high, but the north-facing slope exposure helps preserve aromas, flavors, and acidity in the fruit.
