History and Origins
Pierre Gaillard launched his career working for two of the Northern Rhône's most storied houses, Guigal and Vidal Fleury, before striking out on his own. In 1981 he acquired his first vineyard parcels at Clos de Cuminaille in Saint-Joseph, a site with roots stretching back to the Roman era. The domaine was formally established between 1986 and 1987, and over the following decades Gaillard expanded steadily across the Northern Rhône from Côte-Rôtie in the north to Cornas in the south. He also extended the family's reach into southern France, adding holdings in Roussillon and the Languedoc.

Vineyards and Terroir
The domaine's 77 hectares span three distinct regions of France. In the Northern Rhône, 25 hectares sit on steep slopes on the foothills of the Massif Central, where the soils shift from decomposing schist in Côte-Rôtie to altered granite in Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and the Côtes-du-Rhône. A further 29 hectares lie in Banyuls and Collioure in Roussillon, with an additional 10 hectares in Faugères in the Languedoc, both regions also characterized by schist soils. The continental climate across the Northern Rhône holdings is tempered by Mediterranean influence and benefits from limited but regular rainfall.
- Decomposing schist in Côte-Rôtie; altered granite in Saint-Joseph and Condrieu
- Schist soils also dominate holdings in Faugères and Banyuls
- Steep slopes on the foothills of the Massif Central throughout Northern Rhône
- Continental climate with Mediterranean influence and regular but limited rainfall
Grapes and Wine Style
Syrah is the backbone of the domaine's red wine production, grown across Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Cornas. Viognier and Roussanne anchor the white wine range, with Condrieu representing the domaine's most prestigious white expression. In the south, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Carignan come into play for the Banyuls and Faugères wines. The house style across all wines emphasizes elegance and refined terroir expression, with red wines showing fine tannic structure. All harvesting is done by hand, with vinification carried out separately by plot and grape variety.
- Syrah dominates Northern Rhône reds; Viognier and Roussanne lead whites
- Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan used in Roussillon and Languedoc holdings
- Manual harvesting and plot-by-plot vinification throughout the domaine
- Red wines spend 18-20 months in 50-70% new French oak
