Location and Setting
Panerole sits within the commune of Novello in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, visible from the road connecting Monforte d'Alba to the town of Barolo. The vineyard spans roughly 40 hectares across elevations of 320 to 390 meters, with aspects ranging from south to south-west and south-east. Soils and Climate
The soils of Panerole are classified as sandy Sant'Agata Fossil Marls, a formation shared with several other Novello MGAs. These soils incorporate clay and limestone alongside the dominant sandy matrix. Sandy soils tend to warm quickly, promote good drainage, and contribute to aromatic, perfumed expressions of Nebbiolo with somewhat more approachable tannins than the heavier Helvetian marls found in parts of La Morra and Barolo commune. The microclimate is cool and ventilated, typical of Novello's elevated terrain, but the valley opening toward the Po Plain allows warmer air masses to temper the site during the growing season.
- Sandy Sant'Agata Fossil Marls with clay and limestone
- Sandy soils encourage drainage and aromatic Nebbiolo character
- Cool, ventilated microclimate with moderating warm Po Valley winds
- Soil type distinguishes Panerole from the Helvetian marl zones of La Morra
History and Recognition
Panerole holds a place among the earliest recognized Barolo crus, with a history of single-vineyard production predating the formal MGA classification system introduced in 2010. The vineyard is held by multiple families and producers, reflecting the traditional Langhe pattern of fragmented ownership across historically significant sites. Its inclusion in the MGA framework as one of 181 designated vineyard areas formalized recognition that had already existed in the market and among local producers for generations.
- Among the earliest Barolo crus to be produced and bottled separately
- Multiple family ownership, consistent with Langhe traditions
- Formally classified as an MGA under the 2010 Barolo disciplinare revisions
- One of 181 MGAs recognized across the Barolo DOCG

Barolo from Panerole displays a dual personality rooted in its sandy marls and cool-to-moderate microclimate. Wines can be muscular and rugged, reflecting Nebbiolo's structural demands for extended maceration and aging, while also achieving elegance and refinement when vinified with precision. The sandy soil component tends to produce Nebbiolo with lifted aromatics, fine-grained tannins relative to the grape's natural intensity, and good aging potential without always requiring the decades demanded by wines from heavier clay-dominant soils. Notable producers working this MGA include Elvio Cogno, Giovanni Sordo, Terre del Barolo, Famiglia Anselma, and Cascina Ballarin, among others.
- Style ranges from muscular and structured to elegant and refined
- Sandy soils contribute aromatic lift and relatively fine tannin texture
- Nebbiolo is the primary grape; Barbera and Dolcetto also grown on-site
- Multiple respected producers work fruit from this MGA
Barolo from Panerole typically shows classic Nebbiolo aromatics of dried rose, tar, and red cherry, with the sandy soil component adding floral lift and spice. Tannins are firm and structured but can show a degree of finesse compared to heavier clay-dominant sites. Expect good acidity, medium to full body, and a palate that rewards time in bottle.
