Orbelus Winery

The Orbelus project began in 2000 when the first 96 dka of land was acquired near the village of Kapatovo in the Struma Valley. The first vineyards were planted in 2006. The winery takes its name from Orbelus, the Thracian name for Mount Pirin, acknowledging a region where the Thracians cultivated vines and valued the land for winemaking in antiquity. Since those early plantings, Orbelus has grown to become a defining estate in modern Bulgarian wine, earning its place as the country's pioneer in certified organic viticulture.

Orbelus sits within the Struma Valley appellation in the Melnik sub-region of southwestern Bulgaria, classified as PGI Thracian Valley. The estate's 20 hectares are divided into 20 individual plots spread across the villages of Kromidovo, Kapatovo, Harsovo, and Marikostinovo. Vineyards range from 160 to 250 meters above sea level on clay and sandy soils. The climate is Mediterranean, warm and sunny, shaped by the encircling presence of seven mountains: Pirin, Slavianka, Sengelska Planina, Belasica, Ograjden, Malashevska Planina, and Rupite. This sheltered mountain amphitheater creates the warm, dry conditions that suit Melnik's native varieties.

Orbelus holds the distinction of being Bulgaria's first winery certified for organic production, meeting both Bulgarian and European organic standards. This commitment to organic viticulture is central to the estate's identity and shapes practices across all 20 of its vineyard plots. The estate grows an unusually diverse range of varieties, including the native Melnik grapes Early Melnik and Broadleaf Melnik, as well as the hybrid Melnishki Rubin and the aromatic Sandanski Misket. International varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Primitivo, Petit Verdot, Marselan, Mourvedre, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris round out the portfolio.

Orbelus produces primarily red wines, which account for 70% of output, with white varieties making up the remaining 30%. The house style emphasizes high-quality blended wines that place local Melnik varieties at the center. The three main wine labels are Orbelus Melnik, Orbelus Getika, and Orbelus Prima. The winery building itself is architecturally distinctive, designed in the shape of a half-buried wine barrel, reflecting the estate's commitment to wine as both craft and culture.
