📜History & Founding

Luigi Bosca traces its origins to 1890, when seven-year-old Leoncio Arizu emigrated with his family from the Basque Country of Spain to Mendoza. In 1901, Leoncio established Bodega Luigi Bosca in Luján de Cuyo. The winery was named after Bosca, a close Italian friend and partner of the founder. Leoncio arrived as a fourth-generation member of a European winemaking family, and he set out to plant European vine varieties in Luján de Cuyo. The second generation added technical expertise, and the third generation, led by agricultural engineer Alberto Arizu Sr., drove a decisive transformation: in 1989, Alberto became a founding member of the Luján de Cuyo DOC council, creating Argentina's first Denomination of Origin for Malbec. In 1991 Luigi Bosca presented the first wine ever certified under that new DOC. Today, the fourth generation, led by Chairman Alberto Arizu Jr., stewards the winery's global expansion while preserving the family's founding values.

🌍Vineyards & Terroir

Luigi Bosca's seven vineyard estates span more than 700 hectares across three of Mendoza's premier growing regions. In Luján de Cuyo, the historic Finca Los Nobles (50 hectares in Las Compuertas, with a property history dating to 1863 and vines averaging 90 years of age at around 1,050 meters elevation) is the source of the premium single-vineyard wines and Icono. The La Linda estate in Vistalba and the La Puntilla and La España parcels in Carrodilla complete the Luján de Cuyo holdings. In Maipú, the flagship Finca El Paraíso, a 295-hectare estate reestablished by Leoncio Arizu in 1926 and located beside the Mendoza River, houses the family's château-style home and serves as a research and inspiration center. In Valle de Uco, the Los Miradores estate in Los Árboles, Tunuyán, and the Miralejos parcel in Paraje Altamira push elevations to 1,150 meters, delivering wines with bright acidity and refined tannins.

  • Finca Los Nobles, Las Compuertas: 50 hectares at 1,050 meters with vines averaging 90 years; source of premium single-vineyard and Icono expressions

🍇Winemaking Philosophy & Production

Winemaker Pablo Cúneo, who trained at Moët Hennessy Argentina and Bodegas Ruca Malen before joining Luigi Bosca, oversees a philosophy centered on terroir expression and elegance over extraction. The winery produces approximately 9.5 million bottles annually across multiple collections. Fermentations proceed in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with cold maceration and délestage techniques used for premium reds to maximize color and aromatic precision without over-extraction. Premium expressions are aged selectively in French oak barrels, with the DOC Malbec spending 14 months in barrel followed by 12 months in bottle before release. Biodynamic principles are applied across the Finca La Linda estate, though the winery does not hold formal biodynamic certification. The winery is 100% certified sustainable and a member of the Argentine Business Council for Sustainable Development (ODS).

Wine Collections & Expressions

Luigi Bosca's portfolio is organized into four principal tiers. The Insignia collection encompasses the house's core range, including the benchmark Malbec (from Finca La Linda, Vistalba, aged 12 months in French oak) and varietal expressions such as Riesling Las Compuertas and Grand Pinot Noir. The De Sangre collection, introduced in 2021 and named to honor the family's blood ties, brings together concentrated DOC-certified Malbec from select plots in Las Compuertas, Vistalba, and Agrelo, as well as a Uco Valley Malbec from Los Miradores and Altamira. The Los Nobles tier presents single-vineyard and field-blend expressions from Finca Los Nobles, including the Malbec-Petit Verdot field blend (94% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot) and the Cabernet Bouchet (a natural crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc). Icono, a Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Finca Los Nobles, anchors the premium tier. Paraíso, the winery's most important wine, is a Malbec-dominant blend drawing on Paraje Altamira, Gualtallary, and Las Compuertas.

🔬The Luján de Cuyo DOC: Rules & Significance

The DOC Luján de Cuyo, created on October 12, 1989, was the first Denomination of Origin in Argentina and in the Americas. Founded by a group of 12 producers including the Arizu family, it was formally recognized by the OIV in 1991, the same year Luigi Bosca released the inaugural DOC-certified wine. The DOC requires Malbec as the principal variety at a minimum of 85%, with up to 15% of approved varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah permitted. Vineyards must be at least 10 years old, cordon-trained, and planted at a density exceeding 5,000 vines per hectare. A minimum of 24 months must elapse between harvest and market release, with at least 12 of those months spent in oak. Eligible zones span elevations of 825 to 1,080 meters across the districts of Vistalba, Las Compuertas, Carrodilla, Agrelo, Perdriel, and others within the Luján de Cuyo department. In 2021, the DOC was relaunched with new district-level designations and expanded membership.

Flavor Profile

Luigi Bosca Malbec Luján de Cuyo displays a classic terroir-driven profile from its biodynamically farmed Finca La Linda vines at Vistalba. Deep purple-ruby in color, the nose opens with ripe black plum, blueberry, and black raspberry, followed by floral violet notes, sweet spice, and subtle earthy minerality. On the palate, the wine offers medium-to-full body with soft, well-integrated tannins and bright acidity that provides freshness and structure. The mid-palate delivers concentrated dark fruit with hints of tobacco, vanilla, and gentle toasted oak from 12 months in French barrels. The finish is persistent and clean, with lingering mineral and spice notes. The DOC expression from Vistalba vines adds greater concentration and silkiness, reflecting the character of old-vine Malbec from one of Argentina's most celebrated sub-districts.
