Les Combottes
lay com-BOT
A tiny premier cru nestled between Bonnes-Mares and Musigny, producing some of Chambolle's most delicately elegant Pinot Noir.
Les Combottes is a Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru situated between the Bonnes-Mares and Musigny Grand Crus. Its alluvial, clay-limestone soils over a historic stream bed yield wines of exceptional lightness and floral precision. Domaine Georges Roumier first bottled it separately in 2005, bringing wider attention to this compact climat.
- Classification: Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru (1er Cru)
- Located in the geographic center of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation
- Positioned between Bonnes-Mares and Musigny Grand Cru vineyards
- Soils reflect a historic stream bed of alluvium from Le Grône
- Elevation ranges from 260 to 330 meters with southeast to east aspect
- Sole grape variety: Pinot Noir
- Distinct from the separate Aux Combottes vineyard located across a village road to the southeast
Location and Setting
Les Combottes occupies a privileged position in the heart of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, sandwiched between two of Burgundy's most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards. To the north lies Bonnes-Mares, to the south Musigny. This central placement, at elevations between 260 and 330 meters on a gently southeast to east facing slope, situates Les Combottes within the classic Côte de Nuits band where premier cru quality consistently emerges. It is important to note the distinction between Les Combottes and Aux Combottes, a separate premier cru located below and to the southeast across a village road. The two share a similar name but represent entirely different terroirs and are not to be confused on an exam or in the cellar.
- Positioned between Bonnes-Mares (north) and Musigny (south) Grand Crus
- Elevation: 260 to 330 meters, southeast to east aspect
- Distinct and separate from the Aux Combottes premier cru across the village road
Soils and Geology
The defining geological feature of Les Combottes is its historic stream bed origin. The soil is a clay-limestone base enriched with alluvial material, specifically limestone rocks and pebbles deposited by Le Grône, a stream that once ran through the area. This alluvial component produces lighter, more fragmented soils compared to the denser clay-limestone found elsewhere on the Côte de Nuits. Lighter soils tend to warm quickly, drain freely, and limit vine vigor, all of which translate directly into the vineyard's characteristic wine profile: pale, fine-boned, and intensely perfumed rather than structured and dense.
- Clay-limestone base with alluvial limestone rocks and pebbles
- Stream bed origin from Le Grône contributes to lighter soil texture
- Light soils reduce vigor and concentrate aromatic expression in the resulting wines
Wine Style and Character
Les Combottes produces wines that sit firmly within Chambolle-Musigny's reputation for elegance and floral intensity. The combination of alluvial soils, moderate elevation, and a continental climate with meaningful diurnal temperature variation produces Pinot Noir of notable delicacy. Expect pronounced violet and rose petal aromatics alongside red fruits such as cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. A characteristic crushed stone minerality runs through the palate, and the texture is silky with fine, well-integrated tannins. These are wines built for refinement rather than power, aligning Les Combottes stylistically closer to the Musigny end of the Chambolle spectrum than to the more muscular Bonnes-Mares character.
- Floral aromatics: violet, rose petal
- Red fruit profile: cherry, strawberry, raspberry
- Crushed stone minerality and silky, fine-tannin texture
- Elegant and light-bodied, closer in style to Musigny than Bonnes-Mares

Domaine Georges Roumier is the benchmark reference for Les Combottes, having first bottled the vineyard as a single-vineyard wine in 2005. That decision brought significant critical attention to this small climat. Other producers with holdings in Les Combottes include Domaine Gilbert et Christine Felettig, Domaine Alain Jeanniard, Alain Brune, and Domaine R. Dubois et Fils. Given the vineyard's tiny total footprint, individual producer holdings are very small, which contributes to the relative scarcity of these wines in the market.

- Limited availability due to small individual producer holdings across the vineyard
Light-bodied, silky-textured Pinot Noir with pronounced violet and rose petal aromatics, red fruit flavors of cherry, strawberry, and raspberry, and a refined crushed stone minerality. Fine tannins and bright acidity give the wines structure without weight.
