Terroir and the Origin of the Name
The name Les Chabiots traces back to the old French word 'caboche,' rooted in the vulgar Latin 'capum,' meaning head. When vines were first planted and the soil was ploughed, workers encountered large boulders weighing between 50 and 200 kilograms sitting just 40 to 60 centimetres below the surface. These rocks, resembling large heads embedded in the earth, gave the vineyard its identity. The soils above those boulders are shallow and marly, sitting over a base of solid limestone bedrock. This combination of restricted depth, excellent drainage, and limestone-driven minerality is characteristic of the finest Chambolle-Musigny sites.
- Name derived from 'caboche,' referencing large sub-surface boulders
- Boulders of 50 to 200 kg found at 40 to 60 cm depth
- Shallow marly soils over limestone bedrock
- Excellent natural drainage from the stony subsoil
Wine Style
Les Chabiots produces wines that sit firmly within the Chambolle-Musigny house style: elegant, silky, and perfumed. The southern exposure ripens Pinot Noir reliably, contributing depth of fruit without sacrificing the commune's hallmark finesse. Expect red and dark berry fruit, violet and rose petal aromatics, and a fine-grained tannic texture. The limestone subsoil adds a mineral backbone that gives the wine structure and length. Compared to Les Amoureuses just below it on the slope, Les Chabiots tends to be slightly less celebrated but shares many of the same structural qualities.
- Red and dark berry fruit, violet, and rose petal aromatics
- Silky texture with fine-grained tannins
- Mineral limestone-driven backbone
- Classic Chambolle-Musigny elegance and finesse

Given its small size, the number of producers working with Les Chabiots fruit is naturally limited. Albert Bichot and Hubert Lignier are among the more widely recognised names associated with the vineyard. Frédéric Magnien, Bader-Mimeur, and Domaine Serveau et Fils also produce bottlings from this climat. As with many small premier crus in Burgundy, finding Les Chabiots wines outside of specialist merchants requires deliberate searching, which adds to its quiet prestige among Burgundy enthusiasts.
