Ken Forrester Wines
How to Say It
Mr Chenin's Helderberg estate at Scholtzenhof, where a 1993 farm-on-auction gamble built the FMC, anchored the South African Chenin Blanc revival, and earned a Decanter Best in Show for the Old Vine Reserve in 2022.
Ken Forrester Wines is the Stellenbosch home of Chenin Blanc, sitting on the lower slopes of Helderberg Mountain in the informal Helderberg sub-area of the district. Ken and Teresa Forrester bought the historic Scholtzenhof estate at public auction in 1993 and released their first wines under the Ken Forrester label in 1994. The flagship FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin), made in partnership with longtime friend and consulting winemaker Martin Meinert, was first trialled in 1998 and 1999 and arrived as a finished wine with the 2000 vintage, immediately establishing itself as a Cape icon. Ken Forrester is a founding figure of the Chenin Blanc Association of South Africa (founded 1998) and is currently Chairman of the association, and is widely known across the industry as Mr Chenin. The Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc won Best in Show at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards, the most prestigious accolade in the global wine trade.

Scholtzenhof and the 1993 Auction
The property has one of the longest histories in South African wine. The original farm, Zandberg, was established in 1689 and Frederick Botha planted the first vines on the site in 1694. The Scholtz family took ownership in 1833 and held the farm into the 1920s, renaming it Scholtzenhof. Ken Forrester, at the time a respected Johannesburg restaurateur, and his wife Teresa, set their sights on Scholtzenhof in 1993 and bought the homestead and farm at public auction. The first wines were released under the Ken Forrester label in 1994 and the focus on Chenin Blanc was immediate and deliberate. French wine group Advini acquired a majority share in the business in 2016, but the Forrester family remains active and the brand identity remains intact.

Helderberg Terroir
The estate sits on the lower slopes of Helderberg Mountain in the informal Helderberg sub-area of Stellenbosch, the southeastern stretch of the district that anchors near Somerset West and draws air directly off False Bay. The home block is roughly 38 hectares of estate vineyards, with an additional 54 hectares under long-term lease. Soils are sand-and-loam profiles over a granite-based clay base, classified under the Clovelly form. The climate is warm and dry with a strong maritime influence; the bay-driven southerly breezes moderate summer afternoons, extend the ripening curve, and preserve the natural acidity that defines the house style of Chenin Blanc. Helderberg is not an officially demarcated Wine of Origin ward; the wines are labelled WO Stellenbosch.

Chenin Blanc and the Range
Chenin Blanc is the centre of gravity of the whole operation. The lineup runs across three tiers. The entry-level Petit range gives the brand its volume foundation: Petit Chenin Blanc as the everyday Chenin, Petit Pinotage as the everyday red, alongside Petit Rose, Petit Sauvignon Blanc, and a Petit Cabernet/Merlot. The Ken Forrester Reserve tier sits in the middle, anchored by the Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc that won Decanter Best in Show in 2022. The Icon tier is led by the FMC. The estate also produces Rhone-style red and white blends, notably the Renegade red blend (Syrah-Grenache-Mourvedre, one of the earliest serious South African Rhone blends), a Roussanne and a Viognier among whites, and dessert and sparkling wines round out the catalogue. Total annual production is roughly one million bottles.
- Three-tier range: entry-level Petit, mid-tier Reserve (Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc), and Icon tier (FMC)
- Petit range includes Petit Chenin Blanc and Petit Pinotage as the everyday volume wines
- Renegade Syrah-Grenache-Mourvedre is one of the earliest serious South African Rhone-style red blends
- Additional Rhone whites: Roussanne and Viognier among the estate range

The FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin) is the wine that built the international reputation of both Ken Forrester and the wider Cape Chenin Blanc category. It is a partnership between Ken Forrester and his longtime friend Martin Meinert, with Meinert acting as consulting winemaker and collaborator on the bottling. The project began in 1998 with an initial trial vintage, was tried again in 1999, and only with the 2000 vintage did the team produce the wine they had set out to make. The FMC is barrel-fermented (selections aged in 400-litre French oak for up to 12 months) and sourced from a celebrated 1974-planted bush vine vineyard. The 2000 vintage was an immediate Cape icon, picked up internationally at a London trade show, and the FMC has remained the flagship every year since. The Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc winning Best in Show at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards put the estate at the very top of global Chenin Blanc on its most prestigious public stage. Ken Forrester co-founded the Chenin Blanc Association of South Africa in 1998 and is its current Chairman. Cellar partner Shawn Mathyse has been part of the team since 2014.

Why It Matters
Ken Forrester Wines sits at the centre of the modern South African Chenin Blanc story. The 1993 Scholtzenhof acquisition, the 1998 founding of the Chenin Blanc Association, and the 2000 release of the FMC together amount to a deliberate, multi-decade campaign to turn Chenin Blanc from a workhorse Cape variety into the country's flagship white. The Decanter Best in Show in 2022 was the moment the rest of the wine world ratified what South African producers had been arguing for twenty years. The estate sits in the same Helderberg constellation as Vergelegen, Rust en Vrede, Waterford, Ernie Els, and De Trafford, but with a different stylistic signature, white-wine-led and Chenin-anchored, where the rest of the Helderberg roster is mostly built on red wine. For students of South African wine, Ken Forrester is the case study in how a focused producer can rebuild an entire variety category around itself.
- Reference producer for the modern South African Chenin Blanc category
- Decanter Best in Show 2022 (Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc) is the highest single accolade in the global wine trade
- Stylistic foil to the red-led Helderberg producers Vergelegen, Rust en Vrede, Waterford, Ernie Els, and De Trafford
- Case study in deliberate, multi-decade variety category building
The Petit Chenin Blanc is fresh and youthful, with quince, pear-drop fruit, and crisp acidity. The Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc layers in honeyed stone fruit, beeswax, and a textural mid-palate from old-vine fruit and partial barrel work. The FMC is rich, deep, and barrel-marked, with white peach, honeycomb, ginger, dried-flower complexity, and a long, finely structured finish that ages a decade or more. The Renegade red blend pushes dark fruit, peppered spice, and warm Mediterranean herb characters. Across the range, the False Bay maritime influence shows up as a fresh acid line that keeps the wines bright even at the icon tier.
