Location and Setting
Kellerberg sits within the commune of Dürnstein in the heart of the Wachau, one of Austria's most celebrated wine regions. The vineyard occupies a dramatic south to south-east facing slope rising from 204 metres at its base to 336 metres at the top, creating a significant elevation range across just 12 hectares. Its terraced structure, with gradients reaching 65%, is a defining physical characteristic and places it among the most demanding sites to farm in all of Austria. The Wachau DAC classification governs production here, and wines fall under the Steinfeder, Federspiel, or Smaragd quality tiers, with Smaragd being the dominant style from this premium site.
- Commune: Dürnstein, Wachau DAC, Lower Austria
- Elevation: 204 to 336 metres (669 to 1,100 feet)
- Aspect: South to south-east facing
- Slopes reach up to 65%, requiring hand-harvesting throughout
Soils and Climate
The bedrock of Kellerberg is Gföhler gneiss, the ancient primary rock that underlies much of the Wachau's finest terroir. Weathered gneiss and slate dominate the topsoil profile, with isolated pockets of loess adding textural and mineral complexity. These well-drained, heat-retaining soils are central to the concentration and minerality that define wines from this site. The climate is continental, with warm days and cool nights, shaped by competing Atlantic and Pannonian air masses. Cool lateral valley winds from the surrounding hillsides moderate temperature, extending the growing season and preserving aromatic freshness in the grapes.
- Gföhler gneiss bedrock throughout the vineyard
- Weathered gneiss and slate topsoil with loess islands
- Continental climate moderated by cool lateral valley winds
- Temperature variation between day and night preserves aromatic intensity
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are the sole varieties planted at Kellerberg, consistent with the Wachau's focus on these two white grapes. Both varieties respond exceptionally well to the gneiss and slate soils, producing wines of mineral precision and age-worthiness. Smaragd-classified wines from Kellerberg are the most sought-after, representing the ripest and most concentrated expression of the site, though Federspiel bottlings also appear. The combination of steep terracing, primary rock soils, and diurnal temperature variation produces wines with driving acidity, considerable structure, and a distinctive stony, saline mineral character.
- Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are the only varieties planted
- Smaragd is the primary classification seen from this site
- Wines are known for mineral precision, acidity, and age-worthiness
- Federspiel wines also produced at lower ripeness levels

The name Kellerberg derives directly from the Kellerschlössl, a Baroque castle built between 1714 and 1719 that overlooks the vineyard. The name was formally established in 1787 as a collective designation for a cluster of smaller individual parcels on this slope. This historical record reflects the long-standing recognition of the site's quality and its identity as a coherent growing unit. Within Kellerberg, two named sub-vineyards exist: Wunderburg and Küss den Pfennig, the latter translating loosely as 'kiss the penny,' a name that hints at the value once placed on its produce. The site is also known under the alternate names Ried Kellerberg and Dürnsteiner Kellerberg.

Notable Producers
Kellerberg attracts some of the Wachau's most prestigious estates, each bringing their own interpretation to this demanding site. F.X. Pichler is widely regarded as the benchmark producer for Kellerberg Riesling, with wines that consistently rank among Austria's finest. Domäne Wachau, the region's large cooperative estate, also produces a respected Kellerberg bottling that offers broader accessibility. Weingut Knoll and Tegernseerhof round out the key names, each contributing wines that showcase the site's mineral depth and structural precision. All four estates release Smaragd-level wines from the vineyard.

- Weingut Knoll: family estate with deep roots in Dürnstein
- Tegernseerhof: boutique producer with holdings in the vineyard
Kellerberg wines are defined by stony, saline minerality derived from gneiss and slate soils. Riesling shows citrus peel, white peach, and crushed stone with a laser-like acidity and long finish. Grüner Veltliner from the site leans toward white pepper, grapefruit, and mineral tension rather than the broader, rounder style seen on loess soils. Both varieties age gracefully, developing petrol, lanolin, and dried fruit complexity over time.
